freeze12 topoff?

OK I'm getting tired reading posts on AC charging alternatives!!

I have pure r12 sys, but have run out of the stuff. I have a can of Freeze 12. Can I just add some to the r12 already in the sys?
oat 90f, lo psi 25, hi psi 225, vent tmp 50.
Seems the sys is just a little low.

What say you??

The answer is no. The two do not play well together. Freon is about $15 bucks a can on E-Bay.... and an EPA 609 cert to buy it legally is about an hours work and maybe 30 bucks. Just a thought. I have 8 cans at the house that I have purchased for 15 or less each INCLUDING shipping and everything...

If you are going to switch, you need to evac, purge, etc... if you have to go to that extreme, you may want to consider fixing the leak... compared to all that the R12 alternative above starts to appear attractive IMHO.

Best of luck!
Morrie

Thanks Morrie,
I was just hoping for a quick fix. If I ever have to open the sys to fix leak or replace components I would probably just change to 134, although the freeze 12 was easy enough to obtain. I can charge it myself, but purging/evac requires I take it to a shop.

ga951: About a year ago, I went through the same thing you are going through. My 20 year old R12 system had lost some freon, probably normal loss thru the factory "perforated" pressure hoses, and was starting to blow a little warmer than normal. I did a lot of investigation and research, looked at all the pro's and con's of each option, and decided to try Duracool, mainly because I did not feel like I had a major system leak and Duracool is very compatible with the R12, which means you can top off your system and not have to break it open and do a full conversion. I bought the kit with gages and a couple of cans of Duracool, topped off my system with one full can, and my AC has worked beautifully ever since. I can't help you with any input on the Freeze12, but good luck with your decision.

The "perforated" hoses are probably leaking schrader valves. Have you ever seen a bike tire go flat? It's the same deal.

Charge the freeze 12 to 90% of the capacity that was recommended for R12, which was 2.09lbs. Adjust accordingly to get popsicles.

White and Matt,
Thanks for the input. This is exactly what I'm experiencing ! Don't really think there any big leaks and no need to open up the sys. According to the freeze12 website, it is compatible to r12 and does not need sys purge.
My plan is to charge to 35 psi and < 300 psi and see what happens to the vent temp!

OT-- Matt, Willys?? I'm inpressed. I drove a 77 cj7 for 13 years and 165k miles. Had more fun it that vehicle than you can imagine Finally had to sell it due to cancer (rust) -- surf fishing will do that to you. My 951 gives me a different kind of enjoyment. Damn I love this car!!

You are mistaken. You will need to purge the R12 from the system.
Freeze 12 is compatible with the lubricants, but not with the R12 itself.
You will not need to break the system, but you will need to vac all the R12 out first.

I had the same problem and decided to bite the bullet and get it converted. AC blows ice cold now and I can refill anywhere. My suggestion is just convert it. It was about $180 and 90 minutes at my local Porsche tuner's shop.
