944 ecu?

HEy guys i was wondering if a 1989 944 ecu will work in a 1983 944. The reason i am curious is because i want to chip my car but i know that the earlier models of the 944 cannot be chipped. i was planning on buy the newer ecu and putting it in my car along with a chip. tell me what i should do guys. thanks

You can make it work but you need the other componets of the late ECU setup. Search should bring up some results.

a 1989 ECU would be for the 2.7 liter. get a 1985.5 ECU and AFM. you have to change them both due to voltage differences from the 1983 parts.

The 1989 DME/ECU cannot be supported in an older car due to the fact that your fuse panel is not a fuse box. The older, late model, 944's have forty-one (41) fuses for a reason, where as the early 944 does not.

However, I believe you would have to re-wire the harness to adapt to the earlier cars electrical system. Just doesn't seem possible or feasible. This is a BIG project, BTW.

Now, if you were planning on installing a late (1986-1989) engine from a 944 in your early car, then it may be possible, but then again, you would need to upgrade the entire wiring harness to be able to utilize all the functionality of the later car. And, install a late fuse box and relays to support the electrical capacity and components.

Just my .02 cents.

I think someone on rennlist said that you cam get a late DME and AFM, but I think it might have to be from the 2.5L N/A to the 2.5L N/A

let me see if I can find that topic and I'll post a link to it ...

here, not sure if this is what you are asking about though: http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/924-931-944-951-968-forum/500678-swapping-early-dme-to-late.html

Won't you need to swap the whole harness?
