4th Gear Syncro out, now 2nd?

So i found a very nice 87 944 with a bad 4th syncro. The guy was holding it for me until i had my boat and jeep sold locally. Made contact with him and started my 6 hr road trip. 4 hours in he calls me and says that while the car was at the car wash, the guy couldnt get it out of 2nd. Now come on. Is that possible or did someone with more cash come along? Stil looking for a 944

Porsche Crest Syncro chart

firefighter7128 go to this pdf.

http://www.cannell.co.uk/944_workshop_Manual/Vol2-tranmission.pdf

There are troubleshooting charts that say what gears are synchronized and matched up.

Sometimes a transmission linkage problem can cause this. There is a bolt that CAN fall out that might cause that issue but it doesn't happen often.
