Many thanks to all Pelicanites. This site is invaluable. After searching posts, posting questions and visiting Clark's Garage, I have settled on the DME as my "most likely" culprit.
Since my car has only 30,000 miles on it, the speed sensors and associated wiring look brand new. When I bought this car, one of the items listed by the PO was a "rebuilt DME". In order to make this a daily dependable driver, I have decided to send my DME out for testing / rebuilding and to carry a good spare DME. I will also carry a spare DME relay. Anyone have a recommending on DME testing? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

There is a place in the factory manuals that tell how to test it but I've never read it. I would send mine to George who's userid here is 944 ecology or IAN at 944online.

i like to test mine, driving at high speed, up parley's canyon....
![]() it seems that there are some tests listed in the workshop manual that involve checking pins on the DME with a multimeter. you may just open it up to make sure the chip(s) are seated properly and that the solder points look proper.

cheapest way is to swap it into another car, and see if it works or not.
