Went to the Local auto dismantler and found a 924s that still has many parts minus some of the front end. What parts could i take advantage of to upgrade my 944. ECM, AFM Suspention........
Few Questions. 1. Will the tranny fit our early cars and what's the likelyhood of it having positive traction. 2. Any suspention parts that woudl be an upgrade. ex: torsion bars. sway bars, springs etc. 3. Does anybody need any parts. I could take pics of the stuff b.c im going back this afternoon....i've never seen a 924S in the junkyard is why i ask Regards J ![]()

you could check the suspension to see if it has koni's or other upgraded suspension parts.
the transmission should fit and may have the lower geared fifth, which a lot of people like. if you were to pull the AFM and DME, i think it has the socket style chip, so you could upgrade the chip. but you will need both of those parts to do it. door handles are nice, as they eventually break. pull the speedometer and see if the odometer is working. hell, i could think of several parts i would scavenge.

Thanks Nynor, keep sending me some more ideas. I Have an 87 944 AFM and DME.. but a spare would be nice, the 924s has the AFM an DME still. the whole instrument cluster was riped out of the dash literaly (dash looks like a bomb went off). passenger handle is good but driver door triger stays in the open position. I'de love the lower gear on that tranney hopefully somone can confirm that it will fit the early 944 cars and i'll try to get the option codes to see if the trany has LSD (posi- both wheels spin?). Like i said if anybody needs some parts just let me know... As Far as the suspention. The Rear is Complete and it has adjustable KYB shocks from the color of them.

KYB shocks are not worth salvaging, in my opinion.
see if it has the original tool packet and spare wheel. what kind of wheels does it have? spare injectors would be nice. i'd still take both handles and clean up the one that is sticky.

Ok door handles it is. Where would the tool kit be located. The spare tire I'll have to check with some help bc it's keyed shut. Fuel injectors I didn't see a whole set maybe they are on the fuel rail somewheres. But that trans swap dedinately is number 1 on the list

tool kit should be located in the spare wheel well area. even if the whole set of injectors is not there, i'd take the ones that are and have them cleaned, etc. those things are expensive. check the glove box for the original owners manual, those are nice. the shift boot? the back hatch glass, the alternator, wiper arms, mirrors, any of the plastic signal lenses, sheesh....
again, what kind of wheels are on it?

Yeah, the more i try to remember the more i remember them being a gold color but they were so covered with dirt that they looked like brass...... problem is the car only has the 2 wheels. i'll inquire about what they do with. or ill search for the set in the pile of wheels they have.

If both wheels spin same direction = Limited Slip diff. I always grab relays from the fuse box if they're there, some can be pretty costly new.

Sounds like a good idea getting the relays. I actualy took out the fuse panel and bought that one. The rest of the relays I put aside if I wanted to buy them later. I will use the transy trick for sure..but anybody know if the trans on the 924S has a lower 5th gear. 016j ithink is the trans type?

All 924S's should have the lower 5th gear if it has it's original transaxle.

Thanks schumi that's exactly the words I wanted to hear.I'm pretty confident that it's original, now taking it off is another story. If I remember corectly I just need to drop the exaust disconect the gear shifter thingy, pull the trang back and out after I remove the trang mount. Does that sound right?

Take the CV's off with a 12-point (only special tool you will need). Then disconnect the shifter and slide it forward.
Disconnect the reverse light wire. Then get into the housing to the driveshaft and disconnect the coupler between the driveshaft and the tranny input shaft. This requires taking out two socket head cap screws. They have to come out, not just loose. Then the coupler slides backwards onto the tranny. Then, and only then, you can loosen the bolts around the two bellhousings and hte two main bracket mount bolts and drop the tranny.

It'll ALL fit your early 944 (ask me how I know) with the exception of the wheels. The offset will be wrong. I'd be draggin' that baby home and stripping it for parts.
To drop tranny (after getting exhaust off, which is pretty easy if you remove the muffler mount from the tranny): first REMOVE the 6mm inner hex head bolts on the coupler and slide it back onto the tranny input shaft. Then disconnect the shift linkage at the tranny (cut the wire), disconnect the backup light switch. In the car, remove the shifter completely and slide the shift rod forward inside the tunnel as far as you can. Remove the CVs. Position your jack. Remove the tranny to bellhousing bolts. Jack up the tranny a little and take the weight off the mounts, then unbolt them from the body. Lower jack and tranny should come with it. What did I miss?

'bout what I said. The important part is to not get axious and loosed the tranny before you get the coupler slid back off onto the input shaft. If there is any bending in it whatsoever it won't budge, which is why you keep everything bolted tight until after you've moved it. Some PB blaster helps too.

Right on I'm pretty stoked about the tranny. I spent a decent amount on the parts I will list below just wish they had a half off day.
Parts. Front seat belts Ignition switch on the column Door handles DME AFM Window switches/ side mirror switch Dme and headlamp motor relays 2 left and one right front break light lense(bumper) A/C vents center and driver side And the most important.......THE ORIGINAL KEY!!! I found it under the seat and it works on the door handles and ignition and when I go back tomorow I'll be able to open the hatch and take the door panels i hid back there and the hatch keyed latch since I have the key!.... Now what do you think about the steering wheel it's a factory great condition minus slot of dirt.. Any recomondations on a cheap jack that will help me drop the trans and be small Enough not to weigh me down and posibly leave in my car if I don't find the spare tire jack in tools in the hatch |
