Fuel injectors
I have been reading a few posts and have noticed that there have been quite a few issues with fuel injectors and severe cases of talking to one's self. I pulled my fuel rail last night trying to get things out of the way to clean up the engine and get a list of items that need replaced or attention and was wondering... Is there a way to tell/test an injector to see if it needs to be replaced without having to hook up the fuel system and let it spray into a bottle?
The ones that I have are a little blackened at the end. Nothing a good cleaning wouldn't remove, but they have sat unused for over a year. I don't really want to learn the hard way that they need replaced.. Also, on the vaccume system, the original tubes are in place that came with the car and they are a little stiff with the exception of the rubber boots at the T joints or attachment ends. Has anyone replaced the tubes with a different material or have any suggestions on this area? Slowly learning about the car piece by piece as I take it appart and having a blast doing it ![]() |

"talking to oneself"---constantly. Usually I can understand what I mean. ![]() I used the Pelican tech button on top and did the injector clean and reseal. I was satisfied. I had a slight problem in getting the same hats and seals. I found them at a VW parts house for $4 each. http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/944_fuel_injector_clean/944_fuel_injector_clean.htm Replace your vac hoses with the Lindsay Racing kit. Get some injector fuel clamps or good nonperforated screw clamps to replace the OEM pinch clamps. The fat hoses should be checked for cracks and the air intake boot usually rots underneath by the nipples. This is just the beginning... GL John_AZ 1988 924S + 1987 924S |

I rigged up a system where I connected a rubber hose over the inlet end of the fuel injector and the other end of the hose to an air compressor fitting. I could then spray injector cleaner into the rubber hose and presurize it with my compressor. I then used a 9v household battery (like from a smoke detector) to pulse the injectors.
All my injectors worked, but they all shot just a straight stream of liquid (this is bad). I was in no real rush so I soaked them in gumout carb cleaner, seafoam, and Techron over the course of about a week. By the time I was done they were much much better (fan/mist spray pattern). In retrospect, it would probably have worked better if I had soaked them in an ultrasonic cleaner (many available on eBay for $100ish). The silicone hoses from lindsey racing are definitely the way to go. |
