Hey guys. Looking to buy a 951.

It's been a long time for me. I use to post here as "overkill" with a 944 S. Anyways. I am ready to purchase my next porsche. I want a 951.

Been checking around online and cant seem to find anything. Im looking for the best 951 for no more than 8000. their either in need of a lot for work or their so nice that their being sold for about 15000.

Anyone know of any nice 951's withing my range? Would like an 87 but will settle for an 86. If I cant have those two years than I'll settle for anything else. I/m living in NJ. Would be will to drive some to get it.

Thanks guys. Funnny ting is that im in need of a secondary vehicle because my truck needs some work. The same truck that replaced my 944 S. LOL. Karma. TTYL.

What do you guys think about this car? It was totally rebuilt by the owner of the vehicle except for the head. He claims that the car is eating about a qt of oil every 1500 miles. How bad is that?

I asked him to do a compression test and he says he has what is need to do it. He said he would let me know.

The car is modified a bit but I think I can deal with that. I really wanted a stock car.

Does 1 quart of oil being consumed every 1500 or so miles seem like much? I know some oil is consumed I just dont know how much.

Also,... a salvage title, how bad is it? Woul dI have trouble getting insurance on it? Whats the deal?

that means two quarts of oil is consumed every 3000. my car consumes about 1 quart per oil change, give or take on my driving spirit.

and the salvage title, get a PPI, and make sure everything is good to go before buying the car and that your happy with everything. my 944 had a salvage title, the only damage was body damage and purely cosmetic. my PO just didnt want to fix it so we got it for cheap.

and that 951 is a pretty good price. take a look at it in person, its shiny =)

I think im still a baby at all this Porsche stuff but i have had 3 944 n/a daily drivers in 2 years. one after the other. The 1st i bought of ebay for 1600 delivered to me from NC to Ark. What I got was a 84 944 from a 19 year old kid who was able to drive me his parts car. My 2nd was off craigs list for 2450.00. it was a 1988 and pretty nice but needed a few grand worth of work to bring it to parr. Last week i got another for 2500.00 off craigs list. it was nearly perfect with real polished fuchs and new tires. bottom line, i think i would look on craigs list. it gives you the chance to talk to the guy andreally look at the car. i was also looking in vegas/reno. the guys are all laid off out there, no rust, $79 one way air fair that includes a steak and one of the best drives home i could think of. just my .02 cents

I checked craigslist and didnt come up with anything better than what I'm seeing on ebay. I have spoken to many of the sellers. I spoke to the owner of the 951 posted above the most. A really nice guy. He is going to do a compression test on the car for me even though I should do it myself.

I am really curious as to why the car burns 1qt every 1500. He did a complete teardown of the engine. All seals have been replaced and most if not all of the bearings too. Everything is pretty new one this car. So why it's eating a 1qt every 1500 is something I dont know. A leak would be fairly obvious unless he's wiping. A compression test would indicate if the piston rings or anything in there was allowing more oil then usually into the combust chamber. What else is there left? it's either leaking or burning.

He's owned an 85.5 before this 951. He completely rebuilt the engine in the 85.5 too. He moved on to a BMW now. He said he's done with the 951. Bored he said.

I Believe that in the factory manual it says that normal oil consumption was 1 quart every 600 miles. I could be wrong since this off the top of my head.

The manual does say something like that, but any engine that burns that much oil should be suspect. Bad rings, scored cylinder walls, crankcase breather issues or just plan major leaks. Other issues that arise from the turbo are the seals on the turbo going. Check the intercooler and pipes for excessive oil accumulation. Some oil is normal, but if it a huge amount of oil then the turbo is probably needing a rebuild. Same goes for the hotside of the turbo.. if the seal is shot you will get a nice cloud of blue smoke out of the exhaust when on boost.

Acceptable to me, 1 quart every 3-4k miles with normal driving. If the car is tracked or driven hard all the time (im talking high RPM at all times), 1-2 quarts isnt out of the question. My n/a used to do a 1 quart a track day... about 2-300 miles.

Well,.. this is what he claims:

A BEAUTY AND A BEAST!

I loved and cared for this car for 7 years, continuously making it better and better. It always returned the love, running great, performing amazingly and never letting me down. Now it is better than ever, but the fact is, I am over it. So I need to find it a new home that will love and cherish it almost as much as I did.

Link to more pics: www.deitzco.com/951.zip

4th owner, adult owned, non-smoker. Maintenance records back to new. Needs nothing. Always starts and idles on first turn. Runs great, a joy to drive slow or fast. Quiet and tight. Corners very flat. Head and shoulders above 99.9% of other cars in braking and cornering. Power is abundant. ..and 28 mpg on the highway! It would make a great daily driver.

160,000 miles – very good condition; very well maintained; looks, runs and drives like a low mileage car. I put on about 5K miles per year.

Body is great, no accidents, paint shines like new (8 yrs old), no dents, no rust, a few chips and minor imperfections. Sunroof works fine. AC system is new (R134) and ice cold. Clutch is smooth and strong. Alternator is strong. Starter is strong. No engine cooling issues. All accessories work electrically, though some mechanical adjustment could be in order (hatch release, power locks).

ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT WHEN NEW

K26-6 turbo (220 HP, 245 in-lbs at 11 psi), sport suspension (Konis), limited slip differential, oil cooler, 4-way full leather power seats, sunroof with protective cover, power windows and mirrors. Odd fact: originally purchased as European delivery, so it has a large first aid kit and a map of West and East Germany (in German).

UPGRADES & MAINTENANCE

By previous owner:

-Driver and passenger seats re-covered in Italian leather, soft, nicer than new (2000?)

-New paint, factory color Mahogony Metallic (2001), (reddish-brown), still very nice

-Momo steering wheel (2001)

-New clutch, full job (2001)

-New stereo and four speakers (2001)

Since I puchased it, all done by me, except head work:

-Replaced all oil seals, intake tubing, flywheel sensors, rod bearings (and more) ( 2002, upon purchase)

*** Engine is clean and dry ***

-Rebuilt front control arms (2002)

-New R134 Air Conditioning system – condenser, compressor, drier (2003)

-Head completely rebuilt, all new valves and seals (2004)

-New Mille Miglia Cup 3 and Kuhmo MX 225/255 ultra-high performance tires (2005)

-New Koni Sport shocks in rear (2005)

-New Zimmer brake discs and Axxis/Repco pads all around (2005)

-upgraded to K26-8 turbocharger (Turbo S type), Guru chips, Reliaboost boost controller & 65 lb injectors

Estimate 300 HP, 330 in-lbs at 18 psi (2006)

-A-pillar gauge pod (boost and oil temp)(2006)

-New 968 M030 front & rear anti-sway bars (2009)

-New Ansa muffler section (2009)

-New hood and hatch shocks (2009)

-New battery (2009)

-New belts and rollers (2009)

-New Axxis/Repco brake pads – (2009)

-Oil changed every 3000 miles or less (Mobil 1), spring and fall.

ISSUES (all minor):

-Consumes 1 quart oil every 1500 miles (that’s every 3 months for me).

-Cruise control jumps 5-10 mph when you set it (very common). I have checked, cleaned and re-soldered everything, still does it.

-Blaupunkt Monterey stereo w/CD works great but display is dead (have an Alpine unit I will include).

-Power locks and hatch release work electrically but need to be adjusted mechanically.

-Track time: 2 track days in 2003, one in 2005. No problems, performed amazingly, just too nice for the track so that was it.

Thanks for the fac mans,.... does anyone have PET available for d/l? Can someone PM me please.

I'm stumped as to what to do. I got an email from the guy about the 951 thats eats 1 quart every 1500 miles or so.

Email:
Compression check done:
#1 - 135 psi
#2 - 135
#3 - 133
#4 - 136
Seems good for 160K miles, all the same anyway. I took photos of the gauge
readings for each cylinder as proof. Little or no oil film in
intercooler pipe (same since turbo upgrade). Maybe the valve stems
seals are worn.

He checked the intercooler pipe and said it was clean. The stem seals were replaced in 2004. What are the chances they are worn after 5 years? What else can I ask him to check?

You think this car is buyable? how much you think I should offer for it? He's asking for 7500? Im going to take a drive and look at it and drive it around to see how its feels. From what you guys know from this thread, what do you think this car is worth?

Hi, the 951 sounds like a nice car and has proper maintenace done to it. Don't let a quart or two of oil bother you. My car does the same but runs fine and doesn't smoke. I have 134K on the clock. I am sure I have a small amount of ring wear and turbo seal could stand to be replaced down the road but she runs just fine as is. Take the car for a nice run and you will have a smile on your face.

Where in NJ are you? I stopped by an auto repair place that had a gemini gray on sitting for 6 years. It looks good but I am sure the belt snapped so it would need a few grand worth of sweat to get it going. The owner of the station said he would sell it in the 5k range.

@ ballysdad - I live in belvidere. Unfortunately I newed a 951 that is running because I have to do head work on my truck. Once my truck in running I can play around with the 951 all I want. The 951 has to run good so I have something to drive while I work on the truck. 5000 for a busted 951?!?!? Would have to be pretty sweet other then its bad fortune for me to spend that much on a 951 that is definitely out of comission.

@ zedsn - Im thinking I agree with you. the guy is honest. he didnt have to say anything about the oil and he did the compression test and has pic for proof. An honest guy. I read the service manual and it says:

Up to 1.58503 quarts of oil every 621.371192237 miles.

Thats alot of oil! His car is doing way better than that plus the car is modified a bit. Larger turbo, chip exhust etc. So I would imagine that with the added power it would eat a bit more than a stock car. Should I give him the 7500 or myabe try for 7000? it does have 160000 miles on it now,...

Hi, you have to remember that these are older performance cars with some miles on them. When you need a quart your check oil light should come on. Mine does. I think if you got the car for 7000 that would be a good deal for you and with todays market he just might bite. Look her over carefully again and if you like what you see make him an offer if you want it. You never know. The mods he has done are pretty good and safe. He has retained the stock AFM.

Your right. I think I'm goign to go for this car. He seems real confident about his car. I told him 7000 and he said that seems fair but he wants me to come see it and drive and then we'll talk. I think I'll just give him what he wants but only if he can put and ear to ear smile on my face with his car

He said the oil light and check engine light never comes on. he said he estimated the oil consumption. LOL. so Im not even sweating the oil thing now. His mods are safe and thats the only reason why i am going for this car. I really wanted something stock though. But dont we all.

I'm going to call him wed to verify my test drive and possible purchase on thurs. We'll see what happens. God I cant wait. I havent sat behind the wheel of one of these in so long. The 951 being my all time favorite car,... i wont be able to contain myself.
