early vs. late belt tensioner

I'm getting ready to do my belts, is it possible to upgrade an '86 block to a spring tensioner?
Is there a big advantage to having the spring tensioner vs. the early type tensioner?
thanks for any advice

Slam and others have replied on the topic of the retrofit. See post 4:
Engine block suggestions asked

I've read various answers from having to tap holes in the early blocks and other reasons not to do it.
