main bearings and loctite

The Haynes manual talks about separating the case and removing the crankshaft to replace main bearings. Do I have to do this or is it possible to replace them without having to redo the loctite 574? The bearings should be in pretty good shape since I am just doing this as preventive maintenance while I have everything out.

Thanks,
Josh

Pretty sure you have to remove Crank Craddle and Crank. Not sure of work around. I'd pull the engine and do everything. Sorry it's not easy. But it's actually much easier to rebuild engine out of body of car.

Thanks, yeah it looks like thats the only way especially to get that full bearing. I'm under the impression that the loctite actually seals the two crank surfaces and I should use assembly lube on the main bearings. Do I lube the rod bearings as well? I went ahead and ordered the 574 so I will just disassemble the whole crank assembly.

All new bearings have to be lubed when installed to prevent burn out before oil pressure builds up. You for sure do not want any friction.

Cheers,
Larry

I made an Edit Late night and all. Please re-read. Locite 574 is used for sealing metal to metal surface. Not for Bearings. A common rookie mistake is not to seal the Crank Craddle to the lower block with Locite or other sealer. This results in low oil pressure ALWAYS.

Use assembly lub on the Crank side of Bearings only per instructions, such as Clark.

I personally use High temp Permatex RTV Silicone (26B) for crank craddle seal (not assembly lube), cause it's alot cheaper, but that's a choice of products and prices. Locite 574 is great stuff for balance shaft covers and crank craddle.
