Severe Clutch Shudder

The 2.5 has developed a bad clutch shudder when downshifting into second. . .bad enough that the rear tires actually chirp and the shifter jumps around alarmingly. On acceleration, there is no problem, even when the clutch is intentionally slipped.

Motor mounts were replaced recently. Clutch is recent, probably less than 10k miles. Confidence in the shop that did the clutch is not very high.

Did the shop re-surface your flywheel?

Unknown, but I should add that this is a recently developing problem after about two years of driving. Seems like a flywheel problem would have shown immediate symptoms. Or wouldn't it?

Another test drive. Shudder is on decel only, and in second only. . .first and third don't shudder at all, but second shudders so badly it feels like something might break.

Any more ideas on this? I am not at all eager to drop the drivetrain to inspect the disc after my fun plastic tank conversion. . .

Is it second gear or is it that the difference between engine RPM and TT rpm is most noticeable in second? Can you reproduce it in any other gear by mismatching the engine RPM and the trans speed in other gears? How are your tranny mounts? Did shop change the RMS?

I tried to reproduce it in 1st and 3rd with a similar RPM mismatch, and the clutch engaged smoothly. The car now has a single, center tranny mount with late style crossmember.

I presume the RMS was changed, but I don't have the paperwork, and the shop is now out of business (D'OH!).

Second-gear specific. I'm guessing it's not the clutch then. Tranny twisting maybe? Second gear maybe stuffed. Synchros? Can you get the rear up and run it in second gear and make some checks?

Actually, R, I'm probably not suggesting anything you haven't already thought of...
