Great info there HondaDustR, very complete. I feel like I have a good tension on my timing belt but I may check it again to be sure. I just realized from another post that my balance belt idler roller is supposed to be smooth and not toothed like the one I have (retarded PO) so I will be ordering a roller kit and setting things right before I drive it.

944spec_bound: I never really thought about what would happen if you tried to get the crank pulley off without a flywheel lock, great advice. I want to do the WP, seal, rollers, etc by spring so that is good info to keep in mind. I do hope to have all the needed tools by then but it is good to know to keep me from skimping on the flywheel lock.

If you plan on doing any significant work on the car, just buy the lock. It's definitely one of those "best $40 ever spent" kind of tools.
