87 oil cooler and housing on 84 block with 3 piece OPRV. Will it work?

OK, my rebuild project is slowly coming along. This motor will end up being a Frankenstein motor of sorts, with parts from 2 other motors. The shortblock is from an 86 944, is stamped M44/07 but is a 84 casting, so it has the old separate bearing bridges on the balance shafts, etc. It's going to have a head from another 87, and the valvetrain, oil pan and pickup tube from my 87.

My question is, the factory manual specifies that the old style oil cooler housing should be replaced with the updated part. The difference is that the raised cooler boss retainer inside the housing is flat and a plastic spacer is used instead. Also, the oil cooler housing gasket surface on the part off of my original motor (87) isn't a big corroded mess. Are the oil cooler cores the same between the model years, and will an 87 cooler housing work with an old 3 piece OPRV?
