1987 951 Electrical Issue

Over the last couple of months my 951 has displayed a small electrical issue that got my full attention while driving home in the dark the other night. The issue is, I start the car and find the fan will not work when the AC is on and the head lights also do not pop-up. The fan will come back on, if I turn off the AC. Turn the ignition off and restart….everything works fine, including AC.

So, I’m coming home the other night and all of a sudden the air stopped working and the head lights went out, but the side lights remained on (thank God). Tried turning the lights off and on… no luck! Some four minutes later everything came back on again – didn’t touch a thing and didn’t stop driving either!!

I figure I have a relay issue here, but not sure where to start. I am hoping someone knows what is causing this.

On the other hand, I have been spending more time on my other vehicles (non German) so maybe the car has developed a jealous streak 

Seriously though, have any of you 944 / 951 owners had a similar issue?

Maybe the ignition switch or connection if you have already cleaned the battery connections?
Then I would clean all the grounds. Photo credit from Techno Duck:

Does anyone know if the ground points in the illustration would apply to an '83 NA as well?

I went over the early 85/1 944 electrical diagrams and could not verify for sure.

The ground points diagram looks like it came from the 85/2 944 electrical circuits.

I have a 924S and most/all of the ground points are correct.

Techno Duck added a few late model ground points:
Late interior groud point locations

Working on the AC there is another under the dash by the pax R side.

On the ground point diagram, the MP IX is on the bell housing for the top of engine electronics, just forward of the BIG negative ground bolt--MP X

CAUTION If you take the Negative ground bolt out---PLUG THE TDC HOLE WITH TAPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
