Funny gauges on an early 83
My speedometer gauge needle wiggle around until the speed reacher 40 or so, but it's kind of intermittent. The mpg gauge seems to do it too every once in a while. What is more likely? the speedometer cable? or the gauge itself?

I'd say you've got two separate issues. The speedo cable is probably sticking, and you can lube it once you get to the ends (one in the front LH hub, one screwed to the back of the speedo). It could also be that the C-clip cable retainer has come off the grease cap for the hub and the cable end isn't engaging properly. You'll see as soon as you get the front wheel off if this is the case. For the MPG gauge, you could try cleaning the connectors for it - they run from gauge on the back of the speed to it (IIRC). You could also try reflowing the solder joints on the sender to the on the back of the speedo.
