Defroster question

Is the rear hatch defroster and side view mirror defroster hooked up in a series circuit? meaning if the side view mirror defroster wires are not hooked up, the rear hatch defroster wont work either? my rear defroster isn't working and the switch button doesn't light up. the fuse is fine, but i haven't gotten around to checking for voltage at the wires in the hatch. all i know is that my passenger side mirror is aftermarket and it doesn't have the defroster built into it.
