Patting myself on the back

I'm going to give myself a little pat on the back here. I had pulled the engine out of my '83 944 to fix some oil leaks, replace the clutch, etc. This is my first engine pull from any car ever. I'm mechanically enclined, but never took on something of this magnitude until now. I didn't pay a lot for the car, so if I screwed it up badly, I wouldn't feel terribly guilty

Well after doing all the work to the engine, I put it back in last night. I had it all aligned the day before, but it was just sitting on my atv jack, with nothing actually securing it in place.

Starting at 8:00 PM last night, I began bolting everything in place, hooking up all the vacuum lines, wiring do-dads, clamping down all the hoses, etc. By 12:00 I realized that I was tantilizingly close to being able to actually start the car. By 12:30, I was able to turn it over and sure enough, it fired up and ran!

Glad to hear it. It's a good feeling when everything goes smoothly like that.

Lived in NE all my life. Growing up, my dad had a Fiat 124 Spyder and my mom had a Triumph Spitfire - any one care to guess where I got the sports car bug?

My first car was an 81 RX-7. Since then I've had a few other sports cars of mention, including a 2000 Miata that I bought brand new. Did quite a bit of suspension work to that one and ran a few autocross seasons in that before I sold it to buy my first Porsche - a 1977 Carrera 3.0. My second Porsche was actually the '83 944 (which I still have yet to drive!) and the same week I picked that up, I traded my C3 for my 1991 C4 Cab.

There are some great roads here in New England (a few that make my commute to/from work bearable), perhaps that's another factor in the sports car love affair.

It pains me to see minivans and suvs lumbering around off-camber apexes at 15 mph as the sun glints through the yellow and red maple leaves that are coming on this time of year - whilst I'm stuck in 2nd gear burbling along at 1700 rpm in a 250 hp, AWD beast hungry for the next "S" sign. Oh wait, she's turning - release the hounds!!!!!

Good job! Ain't it inspirational hanging around other lunatics? I took on a project this summer that I never would have considered a few years back.

Enablers!

I HATED those guys! I found myself on some pretty sick mountain roads on Rt 50 through West Virginia coming back home from Kentucky, and there was just a little too much traffic. I actually turned around to get another shot at a really good run I spent most of behind some loser. There's nothing good anywhere where I live.

Well the good news is, that I got the car on the floor last night and it moved under it's own power. The bad news is that the new clutch slave cyl. is pi$$ing fluid (hopefully the bleeder valve is a little loose as fluid was "shooting" out the back), and I still have a significant oil leak somewhere at the middle of the engine on the passenger side - I suspect the oil pressure relief valve or that vicinity.

Pretty smooth idle though, and I ran it for a good 20 minutes with problems. I just want to drive the dang thing!!!

Good news! I drove the car around the block. I'm pretty impressed actually. No drama to speak of. Got it up to second gear and about 3500 rpm without incident. Still have to find the oil leak . . .

You taught me a lesson which I will remember for the rest of my life.

I was already done with my engine rebuild when this happened to you but I will always double check, triple check for rags and paper towel.
