944 NA single piston brake caliper question

Quick questions about the early 944 NA single piston brake calipers.

Are the front and rear calipers the same?
Does anyone know the bolt spacing on the ears?

TIA

The spacing is different, though I do not know the dimensions.

Anyone? What do you early NA guys do for an easy bolt on brake upgrade? Is there something between the single-piston and four-piston turbo calipers that will fit under a 15" wheel? Is there a good guide anywhere online that covers the different 944 brakes?

Two options, Rennbay's Wilwood calipers or going with the 4-piston Brembo's.

The Wilwoods fit under the 15''s but are only front calipers, you retain the single piston rears and also the same rotors in the front. Part of the advantage of going with bigger brakes is larger rotors, more swept area and better thermal capacity.

The 4-piston Brembo's require front spindles from the '86 951 on your early n/a. You will need to have a machine shop drill out the center of the spindle on the drivers side spindle for the speedometer cable. I had this done by a local guy and it was no problem.. i would give him both spindles however so they know what has to be done exactly. The rear 4-pistons are a direct fit to the rear, no modification needed.

If you do a search, i have covered brake upgrade options for the n/a many times in older threads.

Why do people always want more brakes! I was at the track yesterday and out-brake most people. You need to just learn to carry more speed, and brake less!

The car I'm working is actually a VW pan based Speedster, not a 944. Trust me. I need more brakes I don't think I need anything more than the NA single piston calipers and vented rotors for even the hardest use in this car, tho. The NA 944 brake conversion is allegedly very popular with the VW crowd, I'm just having issues finding any technical info about it on VW forums, so I figured I'd ask about the brakes here.

Does anyone have part numbers for the front and rear brake parts for an early NA 944 with the single piston calipers? I need part numbers for the calipers, rotors, backing plates, e-brake parts, etc..?

Here is what I have so far:

Front L caliper: 944.351.429.00
Front R caliper: 944.351.430.00
Rear L caliper: 944.352.429.00
Rear R caliper: 944.352.430.00

front rotors: 911.351.041.20
rear rotors: 944.352.041.02

rear backing plates: ??

Are these correct? Also, has anyone used remanufactured NuGeon calipers? Are they any different than VST, or is there another brand name to use?

There has been work done on a brake upgrade using Lexus 430 four piston aluminum calipers. This was done by a guy who goes by xshop on the 944hybrids board.

Come on now speedy... Xschop thought up the idea but I was the first one to make it happen. They work great and I am without power brakes.

Sorry about the credits. There was effort from many of the hybrids guys to make this happen including matthewb and xshop.

The Lexus 430 calipers and pads are much much larger than the 4 pot turbo brakes. They rival that of the Big Reds.

This might not be for the average person or a purist, but I did this conversion using aluminum Wilwood GM metric racing calipers. They are cheap and very light and I thought in keeping with the spirit of the original single piston calipers. Turned out that they will not fit under std 15" wheels, so I used some 911 hubs I had that give another ~7mm of wheel spacing. Plumbing is a pain with these also.

I guess I don't have a picture of them installed with the proper steel adapter, but you can get the point. My beef with the 944 brakes was not performance, just weight. Jury is still out on this, have not had it on the road yet. Rears will be tougher, can't find any calipers with small enough pistons. Rear pistons on 944 NA are 36mm dia if I remember correctly. I used the 2" piston dia on the wilwoods, a bit bigger than stock 944 but within the range.
