It is a question of size (911 v 944)
 

Hello chaps!

I am actually a 911 man but am thinking of upgrading to a 944 for various reasons mostly to do with practicality and cost....

I would like to know if the 944s are bigger / smaller in any dimension that a 77 911? The reason for this is i need to know if i will be able to fit it in my garage. So i guess i also need to know about the turning circle.... (it is a tight lane and 90 degree turn into a narrow garage) I can get the 911 in in about 2 turns.

944 is wider, I have both and the 944 is only marginally tighter where I turn out of my garage, but there is a difference. Much more space in the car, especially with the hatch. Much better as an everyday car.

944 is a little under 14 feet long. turning circle imo is pretty tight, i can do u-turns sometimes into the first lane

Sounds like an upgrade from a 911 (930?) Would be a good option for you. I think maybe the 911 has more engine and power though.

The length you quoted is for the "European" 944; the US bumpered car is longer.
Unfortunately I know these things without looking them up for many of the 9000 different types of car I've made car covers for( wish I knew how to make pots of money instead!!!)..

944 is wider. I just looked in my garage. They appear to be about the same length (with US bumpers)

Yep, the 944 is about 2" wider than the 924S, but same length

If you are changing to a 944 get an S2 manual. Ideally, get the 944 and hide the 911 in a mates garage. The 911 will start holding it's value better than the 944 too.

You know this is a subject for debate, but the 911 is much cheaper to maintain than the 944.

Of course, it all depends on what parts you use, who you buy your parts from, and whether or not you use Synthetic oil all the time.

Like I said, "a subject for debate" but my 911SC is much cheaper to maintain than the 944.
