84 944 water damage / won't crank

944 sat in 2 1/2 feet of water ; water got up to and into dee , relays , fuses ,
ignition switch etc. Motor will not crank / but starter clicks and spins ( but won't engage flywheel ) Anyone out there have any ideas what to look for first. Have owned this car for 13 years and this breaks my heart !
THanks Guys

If your car still has the snorkle on top of the belt covers, water will enter the AFM and beyond and ruin the engine. Do not crank the engine. Porsche said to remove the top snorkle and cap the ends with chair rubber caps.

Let it dry out.

Early cars also did not have the wheel well sheild to prevent water from getting into the air intake. Many engines were ruined when water entered the AFM and beyond.

You are actually lucky the engine did not crank. The starter may have saved your engine.

Remove the starter and test at a local store or just let it dry out.

Drain your oil and replace the filter before you try to start in case water entered via the lower AOS seal (oil fill tube)

how long did it sit?

and take out the spark plugs. when the engine cranks over, it'll just spit any water that's left in the combustion chamber out the spark plug hole.

Water

In addition to all the above suggestions (they are spot on) I would take the spark plugs out, take it out of gear and use a 24 mm socket to turn the engine over by hand. I little WD 40 down the plug holes may help. This will give you a good feel for the amount of resistance to turning without any compression. If this is "easy", then I would be reassured.

When I was sure that there are no issues with the crank turning, with a good starter, crank the engine over with no plugs in it. This will get everything moving at higher speeds.

My starter was flooded and failed - I am not surprised at your starter problems.

I would check the gas tank - did water get in it?
Was the exhaust system flooded? If so, try to drain it - remove the muffler from the catalytic converter may be easiest.

Good luck!

84 944 water damage / won't crank , thanks guys

update stuff done / checked :
starter replaced , oil changed ( had 5 quarts of water in it ) exhaust drained ,
no water in gas tank , plugs out ( no water in cylinders ) motor turned over by
crankshaft bolt ( motor turns freely ) . A jumper wire was connected between the switch side to the positive side of starter solenoid ( starter will not engage flywheel and crank motor !) suspect is the ignition switch , dme relay and other under the dash wiring etc. thanks in advance guys for your help

Another quick thought -

Check the transmossion for water - there is a vent on the top that may allow water to seep in if submerged.

thanks to everyone for the replies /84 944 water damage / won't crank

I wanted to clarify a point ; when i say the motor won't crank , i mean that it won't even rotate. I guess its makes sense that this is the result of the car sitting in the water. My feeling is that it relates to either the ignition switch or
DME relay . I am guessing that the DME relay is a part that isn't in the basic ignition / starter circuit because it waits for a signal from the sensors that detect
engine rotation. The DME and ignition switch can be purchased for about $ 38.00
dollars , will get back to you after I have replaced these.
thanks,

crank it over by hand. then u'll know whether or not the rotating assembly is rusted solid. take the spark plugs out and as suggested, spray some wd40 into each cylinder. then put a 28mm nut and a breaker bar on the crank nut and gently push it.

Starter replaced ( solenoid was dropping voltage to starter motor ) . Keep in mind sometimes
rebuilt parts are defective . The ignition switch was also replaced and was part of the problem. Thanks for all the suggestions and help. IT lives , it lives , maybe will get this thing
back on the road again soon ( after a cylinder head rebuild job ) stand by old friends !
