automatic vs. manual torque tube

Can anyone tell me for sure the differences between the automatic and the manual torque tubes? Is the transmission pattern the same on them? the tube length? the shaft length?

I have been looking through a manual i have and it shows a bearing flange in there. will this bolt into the manual transmission torque tube? Does anyone have some good pictures of that bearing flange? possibly dissasembled?

Thanks,

Matt

Completely different. Auto tube has longer shaft at the front end, with differences for rubber damper plate.

If those are the only differences then I would not really call that completely different. Is the bellhousing bolt pattern on the back end the same? Since you only mention differences in the shaft, are the tubes and flanges the same? I am interested in the torque converter carrier in the back. will that attach to a manual torque tube.

I am not looking to use an automatic torque tube for the typical manual setup. I am investigating the possibility of putting a clutch in the rear bellhousing. I am wondering if the bearing flange in the back of the auto torque tube might be modified to carry a flywheel.

Thanks,

Matt

At the rear, the driveshaft is just like the manual.

The Auto tube is not drilled for the shifter mount.

The rest could be made to work, given enough time and money.

Does the automatic version have a "bering flange" as stated in the 944 service manual that bolts into the rear bellhousing?

right...it's at the rear of the torque tube housing...4 bolts are used to attach the flex plate to the rear of the TT keeping it in place...then 3 more bolts attach the torque converter to the flex plate.

then as George said, the front of the TT has the rubber damper which is very different from a clutch set up.
