Water pump housing insert collars

My 2.7L replacement water pump, which is a Zim's rebuilt unit, has two protruding inserts or collars in two pf the bolt holes (circled). The protruding inserts/collars don't allow the pump to bolt flush to the block -- the bolt holes they line up with on the block aren't big enough to take them. The water pump I just removed doesn't have these.

What's going on? Are some blocks drilled to take these, and others aren't? Do new pumps have these, or are these only found on some rebuilds?

And if your block isn't drilled for these, are you supposed to remove them?

Side view to show how far they protrude:

How did you pull them out without damaging the pump sealing surface? They seem to be made from spring steel, and are in there pretty tight...

With a pair of vice grip, pinch the dowel so it compresses the gap then twist back and forth at the same time pulling it out. It should come out.

Thanks -- I'll give it a go. Do you have any idea why they are in there in the first place? (I'd phone Zims to find out, but they are closed for the Thanksgiving break.)

OK - got them out. Didn't have a pair of vice grips, so I wrestled with a set of non-locking multigrips. Didn't actualy remove them with the multigrips, but I mangled the end of one of the inserts badly enough that I could put a drill bit through that was about 6mm in diameter, and then tap it out. The insert came in handy to help press the other one out, also tapping with a hammer.

So not the most elegant approach, but it's done. Thought I'd write this up in case anyone else comes across this. I wonder if these dowel inserts are anything to do with a 968 block? (since the 944 and 968 have the same waterpump...)
