help with 83/944

car is hard to start, when I get it running it idles a little rough and does not like it when I open up the throttle.

I am sure this is some sort of fuel or spark issue, but I am noticing that the fuel pump is not coming on when I have the ignition on, but when I hit the starter I can hear the pump get going. is this correct? on other cars I have worked with you usually hear the pump come on when the ignition comes on, but all cars are different, I just want to make sure this is right.

before any one asks: the car has a new DME, DME relay, new reference/speed sensors, new battery, I have a volt meter hooked up and am getting a good reading there. my thought is that it could be the ignition switch itself or I have a spark issue.

Have you eliminated all vacuum leaks? Have you inspected the "tracks" on the AFM? Is your fuel pressure within spec? Does it run better warm? Have you inspected/cleaned up engine grounds?

it runs, and about the time the thermostat opens up it dies, and the its almost impossible to start. I just had it running about 5 min ago, the engine actually sounds good, up until the point it dies, checked all the vac lines.

If you can get it running again by opening up (backing out the screw on) the idle bypass, I'd say your auxiliary air valve is stuck partly open. Where are you located? The early cars seem to have a hard time with extremely low ambient temps after the AAV closes on warmup. I tweak my idle up in the winter to accommodate this issue, and the car has a new AAV in it. Changing the AAV is a pain, as it live right under the intake.

Did you buy it with this issue or did this issue happen all of a sudden?

I've have done an insane amount of work on my 83 what i did to resolve an issue like this will come to me soon enough

Is this issue only when it is cold. or is this the issue every time you start the car? ( would make me think it's a temp issue)

Am i far off to think maybe the DME TEMP Switch here guys?

If it is his Aux air valve stuck open The car would run rough when cold but then run better once warmed up i would think correct?

Just a few ideas here so far and there are ways to check them both without having to buy new.. some were on this forum there is a way to test the DME Temp switch

I agree very cold weather 40's it runs a bit rough after a few min warmup it runs like a champ.

You know. It could be something as simple as finding the Grounds on the car and Cleaning them all up. that maybe you're problem right there.

I remember doing this and the car ran allot smoother as if it were running on old gas vs new
