Odd Sounds
I have been worried lately about what my 2.5 does when I fire it up. First, the tach needle moves up and hovers just under the one. When I press the gas pedal, it shoots up into the higher numbers, and there is a weird sound coming from up front. I can hear a slight whine that speeds up and slows down when I step on the gas, and it also sounds like s weird growl, almost like an exhaust sound.
To make matters worse, while running, the temperature gauge slowly rises until more noise comes from under the hood, like a loud "whooshing." Also, the longer I let it run, the less fuel it seems to have in it. How concerned should I be?

If you re-route the exhaust into the cabin, the problem will go away.

check the chrome kidaedor valve - if it gets stuck it can do that, and rust your muffler bearings too

How's your blinker fluid? When mine gets low, the pump cavitates and I hear a mix of the sound you're describing and Glenn Beck's voice.

It could also be the Kuhneutson valve - a common but relatively cheap fix at $65 for a new part.
