belts...
So I need to change the timing and balance belts on my car before driving it this spring since I have no idea that last time they were changed. I looked up the write-up on clarks garage, and is talks about removing the t-belt without removing the balance shaft gear in place.
Has anyone out there had any luck doing it this way, or is the flywheel lock the only way to go? Thanks, -Ryan

You can remove the balance belt and the cam belt without removing the front crank pully.
Remove balance belt. Loosen and remove the cam belt from the top cam gear down to the lower crank pully(s). Grab the cam belt on 2 sides with 2 hands and in the shape of a big "U", lower the belt as you tilt the top down to the ground. Now wiggle the belt out from around the pully. It goes in the same way but you have to make sure the belt sits tight in the crank pully teeth when you put it on the top cam gear. Footnote: On later cars with the spring tensioner, remove the tensioner---much easier. GL John_AZ |

When removing the tensioner on late cars to do this, be sure to follow the factory torque upon re-torquing own the tensioner nuts. You don't want those to be too lose, but at the same time stripped tensioner studs would not be fun. A bit of Loctite 242/243 as well.

Recently did the belts/water pump thing....the timing belt and the balance belt can be installed without locking the crank and removing the drive sprockets...it is a "fiddley" process but can be done.....helps if someone is working from the top side while another person is under the car making sure the (timing) belt feeds thru properly....the balance shaft belt is easier than the timing belt (its smaller).

yea it's pretty easy taking it off. putting new one back on is alot more "fun" heh

So once piston #1 is set to TDC, the belts can come off?
