checking clutch disk wear

hi.
i followed the instructions on clarks, and my measurement came to about .6 inches, or 15.24mm. I guess that's good right? It seems too good as clarks says that a new clutch is around 18mm and it should be replaced at 34mm.
I'm wondering if I did it right. It doesn't matter if the car is in gear, right? I just put the car in reverse, put the e-brake on, jacked it up and looked through the inspection hole and measured. is that all there is to it?

To be more accurate, get a couple of deep sockets and instead of using a ruler or tape measure, stick a deep socket between the opening. Make it a socket that you can just barely get between the clutch fork and bell housing. Take it out and now measure.

Thats all there is to it. I put a new clutch disc in and my opening is about 15mm. I used a thicker aftermarket disc. OEM Sachs is a little thinner and like Clarks wrote, is about 18mm new.

There is also adjustment of the Clutch pedal springs itself. I've heard that can make a difference on a sort of preload to clutch. (ie early engagement) but I haven't found a good explaination of it.
Maybe check you clutch pedal is not much higher than you others...
