Door Handles - Year Differences?
They look the same from the outside, except for 968, but are there any differences between 24, early and late 44 handles?
TIA rasta

The early handles have the plastic insert (sometimes smooth, sometimes ribbed) I believe. I'm not sure but I think the early handles did not have the door lock microswitch? Maybe only some cars early cars. The late handles are either smooth or have the porsche script and likely have the microswitch. They both use the same gaskets and all the parts should be interchangleable (cylinder, lever, etc). I have a set of late scrip handles, late smooth handles and an early drivers side handle with the insert which is where I am getting my info from. Someone else may know a little more about them than I.

Early 944's, 924S, 924's, and the "early" later models ( 85.5- 86 I think) have the plastic insert, the 87 and newer models have the PORSCHE script handles (didnt know that they made smooth handles w/o the Porsche script.) The parts are interchangeable from what I remember also, just like VII stated above. I say the 85.5- 86 models have the plastic inserts because my 85.5 did, and they changed some things on the later models starting in '87 ex. wheels went from 7's in rear to 8" I beleive

I had no idea there were non script late handles as well but I have a pair with the microswitch. They were not filled in or anything and supposedly came off an 87 S2 from the ebay description.

Alright, attempting to slap scripties on a 1980, will let you know how it flies.

My wife's '86 944, which we bought new came with a script passenger handle and a smooth driver's door handle. My '87 951 (purchased very used) came to me the same way.

I saw a couple of threads that suggested the lock cylinders were incompatible between early 924 and the script handles, but nothing conclusive...can anyone confirm or deny?

Hey Catamax, I've often wondered about painting the early style handles body color. Do you have any pix from a greater distance showing the complete effect?

LOVE IT! I always liked the body color handles of the 968 but want to keep my cab stock. THAT is something I would do and it looks great. How long ago were they painted? Any issues keeping the paint on them. GORGEOUS!

If prepped and painted properly they should last just as long as the paint on the rest of the car.
The lock cylinder might be a little different in design but should still swap out easily. And to add to the controversy, my 86 n/a came with scripted handles on both sides, as did my 86 n/a parts car, and also a friend of mine with an 86 n/a. My 951 has 968 handles that were swapped on. I think Catamax944 is right about the smooth handles being a reproduced part.
