noise while driving
 

hello all

i have just purchased a 1990 944 s2 and started driving it daily

i have noticed that there is a faint sort of whine while driving, it seems to start once past about 20mph, it recently past MOT and they checked the wheel bearings (6-12 check) and didn't bring anything up

im just wondering if its just the way these cars are or could it be a transmission noise

any help would be great

I get a noise like that on the passenger side, so I leave the missus at home and it's all fixed.

Is the transmission whine a common sound for these cars?


I've recently purchased an 86 944 w/ 123K miles on it. I also hear a whine (not the wife) sounds like it's coming from the trans, in all gears. It runs good though other than the sound.

Also, clutch pedal sticks to the floor. I was thinking of replacing fluids this weekend.

Any advice?

My car was really miss treated so im not sure what is or what is not supposed to whine but i can tell you that the Torque tube starts to make a whine when the bearings are going... how to test it im not sure but somewhere on this board someone mentioned a road test, something about full throttle and releasing the throttle or something

Hey, I had a whining rear on my 90 944s2 when I bought mine, but I figured it out... it was cause of non-use, previous owner had spent $$$$ and put few miles on it, so I figured run it and see if it quiets down, and after about a month of daily driving it shut up, started sounding quiet and nice. steering was a little stiff at first but she loosened up after use... and now 8 months later after driving daily it really feels great!! Sometimes I think people try to save their car from mileage as a collector or to save it... and in the process do more harm than good. I checked my rear end, ball joints and it is fine, was just inspected and told it was excellent shape. They are meant to be driven!! Yes you don't want to compound problems... but cars that sit do go bad from non-use.

Don't start a 944 for six months and the engine will rattle like hell... and do damage to the hydralic lifters from lack of oil. Brakes from non use will rust and sieze...so do bearing...get flat spots from sitting. If you just got it... pull the wheels and inspect the bearings, or run it a month daily and see if it still whines.

a good indication too is to check tires for dry rot... another indication of sitting too long

^^ +1 Could be the tires acting up last summer prior to buying my 968 I took the car on severals runs before going in for a PPI LOL sound like it needed wheels bearings a new tranny & cvs turn out the owner had driven with 22 psi instead of 34 -36 psi in them for quiet a while the guy didn't even check his tires let peoples who did service the car take care of that, turn out they weren't better them him ruin a set of perfect & very expensive tires in no time, the car was also sitting weeks at the time in the garage without being move around witch din't help any propably flat spotted the tires at the same time,migth not be your problem but I'll suspect the tires first.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...s/beerchug.gif
