Hello,
today I discovered cracks in the boot (or bellows??). Left side looking the car from outside front. It wasn't immediatly clear, because there was a layer of dark dirt (grease) covering the holes/fractures. I cleaned all and I noticed that squizing a bit the boot a few drops of steering fluid has exit from the holes. I don't know the entity of the problem not even the best way to replace the part ![]() I will attach tomorrow a couple of pictures. In the meantime any opinion is welcome. Thanks! |

If you are lucky power steering fluid (actually atf) is running down from a worn or loose hose or could be worn steering pump seals. If you are not lucky then your rack seals are leaking. The intensity of the leak should be pretty high (or will soon be) if the rack seals are going and it will need rebuilt or replaced.

Hello indio76, It sounds as if you have a power steering leak, which is not uncommon on the 944. You can rebuild or buy a rebuilt unit. It is a real PITA to rebuild. IF you buy a rebuilt unit also buy the power steering reservoir as it has a filter in it that can not be cleaned. You know you put in Automatic Transmission Fluid, ATF, in the power steering reservoir.

Thanks for the answers.
The boot ruined is the one circled in red. I confirm the few drops from inside this boot, and the fluid is certainly power steering fluid. ![]() What are the rack seals you're talking about? I think I can check if it is leaking from them. In case, why do I need to rebuild the steering rack? I wonder if it is not possible to replace these gakets? ![]() About the ATF, is the same as automatic transmission (I mean the Dexron II used on the 944)? |

indio,
you have manual steering, right? I'm not sure what the rack uses, but I doubt its atf on a manual. I'm sure someone else will chime in!

Hi indio76, You did not say what year 944 you had or manual steering so I thought you had power steering. Sorry if I may have given you in the wrong direction. In the picture you posted it is a manual. The rack is item #1 and has gear grease inside. Please confirm if you have manual or power steering, so we can explain better about the problem.

I did a mistake posting that picture
: I have a 1986 944, and it is with power steering. I have this reservoir (see little pic enclosed), I guess it's for the power steering fluid, isn't it?![]() The boot "broken" with some leaks is the one circled in red though.. more pics today as soon as I come back from the garage. Thanks ! |
