84 Ash Tray
Does anyone have tips or tricks for removing the sliding cover on the ash tray for an 84 without breaking the tabs?

No? Why do you want the trey out? I think only way to get the slider out is to break the trey tabs.

I want to refinish the inside of the ash tray. I haven't priced out a new one, might be cheaper overall.

Remove the lid when it is warm, about 100 degrees F and you will probably not break the tabs.
The top slides off the metal bottom.
