Intake air conduct

hi i have aquestion ! i just noticed while doing my engine job that i might be missing a plastic tube in the front left fender to relate the lower engine air entrance to the airboxe?

does your air boxe go to the front left fender and connect with the air entrance under the motor beside the oil pan ? (like a cold air intake) im probly missing this part if they are supposed to connect together!

thnx matt if needed all take a picture but i think its pretty clear !

the intake air comes from the fender, through a short snorkel looking tube to the airbox...down by the oil pan the only air pipe i can think of would be the cooling hose for the alternator.

como este

i also have an additional black plastic pipe the goes from where the one in the pic above ends at the fender wall, and routes inside the wheel well and ends about where the sway bar bracket is.
I've been tempted to remove mine, as it does not appear to even make a direct connection to the upper intake pipe

That may have been added by someone. I don't believe there was anything like that as standard, just the snorkel to the left wheel well.

it has the same look as the upper pipe and is mounted to factory points, does not look aftermarket

there is an intake tube on ebay for 99 cents and the lower one near the sway bar bracket you are referring to is the duct for the alternator

This pipe should have a piece of pipe that looks similar to dryer duct that runs up to the alternator....

Matty89,

The whole Porsche 944 snorkle thing been explained here before. This is the thread for you:

Air Filter?

Start at about post #7 and keep on going...

This is the short version, from post #14:

"Background. The early 944s, 1983 series + had engine failure when the car was driven on wet roads. The front drivers side tire would spray water into the snorkle inlet in the wheel well. The water was sucked into the engine and pooofff. Some engines were replaced by the dealer.

Porsche then designed a "Sheild"/"Cover" in front of the wheel well on the drivers side to stop the water from getting to the snorkle inlet. Part number for my 924Ss ---944 503 321 00
($15-Pelican if yours is missing). You also need to get the side rubber seals. I do not have the part number for the 944s.

This eliminated the engine failure when driving on wet roads, washes or flooded curbs."

just to ask, why does the alternator need an air intake? does it "generate" that much heat? pun intended

The alternator creates an immense amount of heat...it's like having several 100 watt light bulbs burning. The alternator fan is mounted on the pulley and draws air from back to front. This is because the critical diodes are mounted on the back, and must have a steady source of cool air. Some manufacturers (Jaguar, Honda) have mounted the alternator backwards on some engines to take advantage of the natural airflow. Porsche in this case has added an air duct to route cold air to the back of the alternator.

much of the reasoning behind the forced-cooled alt is on the 951 that uses the same alternator, the 300* turbo is right next to it
