I was driving my 944 the other day when the temp guage got really hot, so I stopped and pulled over and there was a gurgling noise coming from the coolant resevoir. Upon further inspection, I realized that oil had mixed with the coolant in the cooling system. The car has been parked since this happened. Any ideas about what it could be or how much to fix? We're thinking head gasket but not sure. Thanks in advance!!

I would guess it's the oil cooler seal, my oil and coolant started mixing and it was the oil cooler seal, dont know how much though sorry, a friend did mine

I too have an '83 944 with oil in the coolant. 99% sure it is the oil cooler. Is a bugger to get to. Don't drive it if you can until it is fixed. There is a possibility that the coolant is getting to the oil. Then you'd have bearings (crank and cam) to consider. The repair kit is $50 to $70 dollars... the cooler (some say to change it in case it's not just the seals leaking) is $250 or so. Most shops will quote 3 to 5 hours (it takes 90 minutes or so according to the book). You'll be flushing the oil and cooling system when you are done. Good Luck. Where in Calif. are you?

hi. this exact problem has happened to me. the problem you are describing is very likely the seals around the oil cooler. apparently this problem is common on later 944 models. i just got my car back yesterday. the total cost of repairs was $325.00. $250 in labor costs, the rest in parts cost. it is important to catch this problem early, because you dont want the coolant to get into the oil. hope this helps

I'm in Northern California ( Sf Bay Area) Thanks a lot for the help, now any ideas on how to get access to the oil cooler? Looks a little tight. Is jacking up the engine a possibility? Thanks again

I had my oil-to-coolant heat exchanger repacked 3 years ago in a european-car garage in Washington State. It took a morning and cost about $270.
