New Guy

Hello everybody!

I have a 1986 944 that I have owned for a year and I drive it only in the summer daily. I have no major issues with the car except when it first starts, I need to give it some gas until it is warmed up. If I do not, it stalls. It has done this from day one. I plan on getting the belts done this Spring in Anchorage a long with a good going over by the dealer. I have an issue with the sun roof not lining up correctly in the front. The motor works fine but the cable binds. Any ideals?

+1 good place to start.

You might as well rebuild the throttle body with the Arnnworx Home Page Throttle body rebuild kit. Same person who makes the cam tension tool and great web site of tech info.

Also check the idle speed adjustment - on throttle body.

Thanks for the welcome and info. If I remember correctly it is about $140 an hour at the Morrison's in Anchorage. I do not have any documentation from the previous owner on the belt and he never did replace it. He drove it one summer and parked it when he deployed. Came home and needed the money. Is there any warning when the belt is about to go? Less power? She runs fine, I just want to be proactive.

There should be an inspection port on the top of the cam belt cover if you remove the rubber cover (at least there is on mine).. I think (but im not sure) you should check for typical rubber wear like shiny-ness, fine cracking and any evidence that it's getting weathered.

Evidence of the balance shaft belts being worn is just a little more vibration in the engine than normal... TimingBelt should be done at the same time since theyre all in the same place. I could be wrong (and i dont doubt it).

And yeah, cleaning your ThrottleBody is a good idea too..

WARNING!

Get the belts changed. It may cost you a couple of hundred dollars or more for a shop to change the belts but the consequences are Bent Valves

The 944 is an interference engine and the valves hit the pistons if the belt slips or breaks. If you do not know when the belt rollers have been changed-replace them. Replace the can gear bolt too. The belt gets retensioned at 1500 miles.

Well, now we are up to $700 in parts and shop time if you go to a mechanic.
DIY is about $250 for parts +-(plus tools). We can help.

Belt tension gauge is about 600 bones if you get the proper one, but I think some guy makes a kit that will do the same thing for about 150
