Location in the engine bay might help a bit

ideola 02-23-2010 11:18 AM

Make and model of car would help too...

slowsven 02-23-2010 11:36 AM

it looks like the thing next to the diagnostic port late 944, left fender, inside the engine compartment.

Rasta Monsta 02-23-2010 11:54 AM

Can't quite tell from that picture. Can you provide a close-up?

That's about close as the camera that I am currently using can focus to it (it was like, 2-3 inches away). It is, in fact, directly in front of the diagnostic port. Although the actual picture is from my 87 924S, my 89 951S has the exact same thing.

M758 02-23-2010 12:31 PM

looks like part of the emissions stuff.

krystar 02-23-2010 12:34 PM

yea it's one of the control valves for emissions. controls lines that routes vapors to the carbon canister

Rasta Monsta 02-23-2010 02:09 PM

And so, somewhere in eastern PA, sarcasm died a quiet, and lonely death.

ideola 02-23-2010 02:22 PM

It's OK Rasta, for once, I got it :D:D:D

callmethewander 02-23-2010 03:34 PM

me too, funny. but when sarcasm does die it will prolly be quiet and lonely

Some sort of vacuum regulator for the vapor cannister. I have no idea how it is adjusted and don't recall anything about it in the factory manual but never specifically looked. I would be curious myself and this question comes up alot with no good answer other than "leave it alone".

Grandad#3 02-23-2010 10:23 PM

Wild Man, you were quietly shot down. Back up some from what you are taking the picture of. No one can tell what we are looking at as you took too close a picture of the object and nothing else around it.

Cheers,
Larry

That may be the cycle valve.

porsche4life 02-24-2010 12:01 AM

Better question... can all this crap be removed and how much weight would it save?

can it be? yes. all the valves, vacuum lines, carbon canister
how much weight? not much...maybe 5-10 pounds?

is it emissions legal to do so? no
is it emissions legal to have it not function properly? ....prob no also

Does OK check emissions? Most definitely not....

TSNAPCRACKLEPOP 02-25-2010 06:44 PM

i do not know what it is, or how to tell if it is set correctly.

At this point , I would replace it with something that I do know what it is, and I would set it to the specifications with which I am familiar.

then, i would drive the truck.

i wish you good luck, mine has one or two of those.

drift a 944 02-25-2010 08:09 PM

I removed mine. No emissions testing in FL either. And WOW that price is absurd!!! Good thing I still have it in a junkpile somewhere, it might be worth a few bucks!

wild man 02-26-2010 10:53 AM

The camera was in fact, too close to get a decent focus on it. I understand it is for the vapor can(ister) purge cycle. I have no plans to remove it from either car, but I think I did mess with the one on the 924S, years ago. You can tell by the fact that the paint (or what ever it is) spot on the threads is several turns above the body of the unit. That's why I was asking about how to check if it is properly adjusted. Since it appears that it is something that is set once, and not supposed to be messed with after that, I'll just let it go. Or maybe I'll crank it back in the couple of turns that it looks like it was cranked out.

That was funny. But what was even funnier,...

I spit oatmeal all over my laptop while reading,... damn.

wild man 03-01-2010 06:11 AM

I know, it's funny, but I wasn't sure what the rasta masta meant about getting a close-up. The reason I was so close, was so that I didn't have to add an arrow pointing to the part that I was referring to.

Only in good fun fun wildman. I've done some even funnier stuff in the past,...
