VW torsion bar?
I once saw a thread about a torsion bar for a VW that would fit the 944s. It was much cheaper that buying "944" torsion bars.
Does anyone know which ones they are and where I can buy them? Also, what size would be a good match for 250 lbs front springs? This is for a daily driver and occasional autoxer. I read that 26mm (solid) would be. Can anyone confirm? |

Cip1.com - VW Parts for your Aircooled Classic / vintage Volkswagen at Discount prices! VW Beetle parts, VW Ghia parts, VW Bus parts, Free shipping. is the website I posted about a while back. You need the 26 9/16 bars.
I think 26 is pretty good for 250 fronts.

I brought stock 944 torsion bars into a vw shop and verified they match. The vw bars are slightly shorter but should be fine.

So is this the set I would need to buy?
Cip1.com - VW Parts for your Aircooled Classic / vintage Volkswagen at Discount prices! VW Beetle parts, VW Ghia parts, VW Bus parts, Free shipping. It looks like the 26mms are out of stock. How much stiffer are the 27mms? Does anyone know what they convert to in lbs? And how do I know if the splines will match up? |

would getting a 27mm vs 26mm torsion bar cause an excessive amount of over steer? has anyone gone 1mm thicker and noticed a difference?

250 seems a bit soft for 27s, but you could make up for this with your sway bar selection. FWIW, I just installed the CIP1 27s on my 931, and am matching them with 300# fronts.
Spring rates are listed on this page at Clark's: Suspension Information and Upgrades

Good to know that the CIP1 Vw bars have the same splines as the 944 bars. Sway-a-way bars marketed for the 944 are $150 more.
There are other VW bars that are seemingly the same but have a different inner spline pattern.

Really, they should all be the same. 924 bars came from the Beetle parts bin.

The Cip1 bars are in my 944, work fine. I did 28mm with 275lb front springs, pretty well balanced. The only difference I found was the length of the splines. Factory bars have less spline. After looking at the sway-away, I think they are the same way. Not an issue unless your trying to swap them without dropping the suspension.
I would go with the 27mm for 250lb front. From Sway-Away's page, should be the same rates for the Cip1 bars... Approximate Wheel Rates 924 & 944 22 mm 98.03 23 mm 117.11 24 mm 138.84 25 mm 163.47 26 mm 191.24 27 mm 222.4 28 mm 257.22 29 mm 295.98 30 mm 338.97 31 mm 386.47
