Magnaflow - A little Frustrated

After searching muffler options, I have chosen Magnaflow for my 86 NA. I will keep the 2.25 pipe, but I want a 3 inch in and 3 inch out muffler, preferably round. After searching I have not found much in the way of WHICH Magnaflow muffler - they make allot of mufflers.

Saying I use a Magnaflow is very generic. Which Magnaflow mufflers can we use. I bought a 3 inch in and a 3 inch out round muffler. It is the same length as the OEM. But it does not look like it would be an easy bend at the inlet. It has a 6 inch diameter. Has anyone used it. Perhaps someone has some info on the round (not oval) mufflers.

Any help is always appreciated!

I would run it by the exhaust shop. . .preferably one that carries magnaflow. . .and see what they say. You'll need it grafted onto the end of the factory exhaust anyway, right?

I was hoping that someone had the answer, as I have a good source for Magnaflow. More than likely I will have to do what you mentioned. Thanks

Here is what I have done; I have returned the muf. and am now expecting a 5 in. diameter, 14 in. length muff. to show up. I am 85% sure it will fit. Also, I have been looking at baffles for the 5:55 am starts. I will post next week.

Here's a tip. Go to the Lindsey racing site and look at the Magnaflow items. The item numbers will match up Magnaflow part numbers. Also, if you google MagnaFlow you'll find several discount part houses online. I was able to get mufflers and tips from a Georgia vendor 2/3 the retail price and very quick ground shipping.

Well, it is installed. I had to have it reinstalled by a specialist...so had to pay twice. Oh well! I am very happy. It is a great sound. Is it too loud... yes. Will it get on my nerves...yes. Will I still love it..YES.

I have kept the original diameter except at the muffler, it is 3 inch in and 3 inch out. The tail pipe is also 3 inches. The cat is a high flow magnaflow (as we all have to breathe air, and very little is gained by removing it). I think its part number is 12867? It shorter than the OEM to make room for the reducer.

I will need to look at getting a baffle. here are some pictures;

Is it too loud... Yes! Gotta love it!! Of course now you have to upgrade the stereo,lol... What size are your wheels? Look like 18s...

The wheels are 17x8.5/9.5. They are Racing Dynamics. They are good wheels. They have the strength of somewhere near the BBS RS and the Fuch (at least that is what I have been told. They need to be painted. I want to trade them for 15x7/8 fuchs. They are overkill on the N/A.

Well after having a VERY loud system, that would have been great if it was just for the track, I have replace it with a larger and more quiet Magnaflow. The wife will now drive the car, and I do not get a head ache! It literally gave me a head ache with the resonance.

Bottom line....I am too old to have a VERY loud system, and the resonance of small mufflers is difficult to tolerate over the long run.

what baffles will you get, and where will you add them?

just curious...my Magnflow has a lot of raspiness that I'd like to lose.

I did not use a baffle. I looked into them but did not try one. The only one I could find did not look like it would work that well...but to be fair, I did not try it. I replaced the muffler.

what model magnaflow is that muffler then? does it come in 2.5 inch?

I am not 100% sure what model mine is, as I asked them to install the Magnaflow muffler that they usually put on these cars. Lindsey Racing sells the 14319 Magnaflow. Magnaflow will have what you want in the 2.5 inch size.

Any time I have heard an exhaust clip it does not truly represent the the sound of that muffler. The deep tone is one thing, but the resonance of a loud exhaust is not nice to listen to, and I do not think it is heard to its full extent in a sound clip. A loud exhaust is very cool to start, but then it gets on your nerves. My Magnaflow cost about $236 installed.
The biggest change in noise level may have been when I changed the catalytic converter to a high-flow cat.

Yeah, I was in the throes of an exhaust project a few weeks ago...the short answer to a good sound is do not remove or gut the OEM cat. It's the only thing that will block the rasp and alot of the resonance. I bought a 2.25" in/out Thrush welded muffler to add on to my system with a gutted cat. Nice sound but a little too loud, WAY too much low frequency resonance at speeds below 3K rpm, and a bit of a rasp. Big glasspack in place of the cat sounded like *****, stock muffler with big glasspack in place of the cat sounded like quiet *****. Thrush welded with intact OEM cat sounds freaking awesome and is easily tolerable for daily driving (and it passed emissions). Nice deep throaty hollow flowmaster type sound with no extra BS. I have to make a video of it in its current form. I think one of the baffles has detatched inside a few days ago and it doesn't quite sound right but it was only $40 and I could probably get a new one under waranty. Keep in mind, the larger the exit pipe, the louder it will sound, and probably the more resonance you'll get. That strong low frequency sound will kill your hearing over time as well as give you a headache.

The last issue of Porsche Excellence has an article of a 944 exhaust upgrade. I would recommend reading the article. The interesting thing is that they used a dual outlet which may remove the rasp as you're diffusing the flow and greatly reducing the velocity of the exhaust.

That makes sense. I guess then the issue is how many mufflers (wait...make that good mufflers) out there are actually available in a true dual outlet tip. The y-split add on dual tips look super cheezy. I actually wish I got that magazine now...
