torktube /Damper problem

Changing out the Damper on my 1987 944, I have taken out the trans axle and I'm trying to get the torktube out, but it will not come out of the back of the motor were the spline shaft is. It appears the piece the shaft goes into is move back and forth. Is the piece that is moving part of the DAMPER? And why will the shaft not come out? What am I missing?

Did you remove the clip at the end of the driveshaft?

This is an automaic transmission right?

No the circlip is not accesable until the damper is released from the flywheel (driveplate).

Spark plugs out to relieve the compression, then working through the starter motor apperture on the bellhousing, spin the motor manually to undo all 9 allen bolts. They are grouped in 3's. Remove completly the outer 2 bolts in the group of 3. That leaves just 3 bolts to deal with. Lossen (half a turn) but don't remove all 3 existing bolts (one at a time.) When you are sure that you have broken free all 3 bolts remove them and the torque tube will be free to move back. Presuming the tranny has already been removed....which isn't an option. Use a large screwdriver in the starter ring teeth to counter the force applied to undoing these 9 allen bolts.

You do not want to strip out these bolts! Use this process to avoid that calamity! Even if it does appear long-winded.

Yes this is an Automatic, Do I also have to remove the bellhousing at this time or after I get the torque tube out ?? The Damper came apart and there in chunks of rubber jamed in and around the flywheel.

Yes, the bellhousing bolts and the Ground wires and also the ref&speed sensors inc mounting flange. Unlike the manual cars, the bellhousing must be removed with the torque tube as an assembly. I wrote a detailed "how to do" on 924.org. look up my username ic932 and you should be able to track down the info. I think it was posted in the 924S section.

I have no experience but can imagine...the secret to 944 wrenching is to ask yourself the question:- "if that bolt is hard to reach...how much harder if I round it off" Treat every bolt with respect and you will be ok. There's certain bolts that I breathe a sigh of relief when they are udnone...

What is the easyst way to get the top bolt out of the bellhousing, Go in from the top side or from the bottom side? It looks to be the hardest one to get to...(Passanger side top)

a little off kilter

use a jack to tilt the engine back and down to get access to that one. A flex socket and swearing in German is usually required. remove sensor block BEFORE trying to remove BH.

I get them from below, YMMV. Viel Gluck
