Leaking power steering fluid
I was at my storage facility yesterday to ready the car up for spring and I noticed a small lake at the front of the car, passenger side.

First of all you have to determine WHERE the leak is coming from. You have to clean the bottom of the reservoir and tighten the two clamps, all lines and rack. The pump itself may be OK. The rack can be leaking past the seals or the lines are leaking. The cooler line is at the front right (passenger) side of your car. I believe our host sells the pump re- build kit. The pump is simple, just be sure you draw a line down the two halves so you can mate up the halves correctly when you put it back together. I would check out the prices on a re-built rack in your area or on here.

Thanks Larry and Cocacolakidd. The rack doesn't leak. The leak seems to come from one of the lines where it is mated to another line, situated above the wp area. It appears the pump itself is not leaking either. I will have to clean the mess to verify the leak, but it looks like a simple fix. Mebbe time for new lines while I'm in there.

When mine leaked it turned out to be the connection at the bottom of the reservoir once I replaced the old hose and put new clamps on it was fine.

+1 on the new clamps as a starting point. The factory clamp at the bottom of the res is one of those "finite" adjustment clamps, which can't compensate for hose squash by being tightened further than a certain point. Porsche superceded the part with a normal clamp, problem solved.

I agree with the crowd, the plastic reso and the lines have a tendency to leak. I have rebuilt both a pump and a rack. Not hard either way but the rack requires attention to detail. Belive it or not AZone sells one for $189 with a life time warranty. I paid $89 for the rebuild kit. I feel they sell the pump kit here but no longer carry the rack kit.
Check Clamps- Check for reso cracks- Replace lines- not expensive- While you are looking make sure the fluid has not softened or ruined your sway bar or A-arm rubber.... Good Luck- Cheers, Mike |
