I would be interested in hearing from anyone regarding the use of a performance air filter on a 944 2.5L engine. This is a basic upgrade that would increase the performance of the engine right? Not according to a 944 racer that I recently talked with. According to the racer, he experienced a slight HP drop when the K & N filter was installed. In addition the filter paper should be dry, the oil from the K & N gets in the throttle body. Has anyone had a similar experience?

Stock air box is supposed to be the best. It's a cold air with a large surface area filter.
Cold air intake? |

stick with a Mahle Microstar...K&N claims are way overblown and they do indeed allow fine particles through the media...you won't notice a difference in the butt dyno but your engine will thanks you.

HOW CAN I GET A BIG, CHEAP, BOLT-ON HORSEPOWER BOOST FROM MY 2.5 NA? Answer: you can't.

This may have merit because I have used a K&N air filter that is sprayed with K&N filter oil. It is supposed to be washed and cleaned on a regular basis. If the filter is oversprayed with K&N oil it may do what solex mentioned. The oil could get into the TB or the ICV/ISV and clog up passages. Bad AOS seals could do the same and blame could be placed on the K&N air filter. Now I will go out and clean my K&N air filter.... John_AZ

You can buy the K&N air filter panel stock replacement at AutoZone and
try it out to feel the difference between the stock and K&N. If you are not convince that engine breath easier and its performance greatly improve, return it to the store in its original box and get your refund after test drive. I used it on my 1983 Porsche 944 NA since 1995. The filter is already pre-oil that will last to 30K miles or more before cleaning. |

Stock air box or K & N
I don't want to pick on K & N, or any other filter, but according to this source the stock air box setup results in better performance for this application. The reason is that the air box provides a source of cooler air, the performance filter only sucks in hot engine air.

intake temp and surface area determine the largest part of whether or not any filter works better than another for power - all other things being equal, put a bigger filter in a colder spot and the engine will perform better than with a smaller filter in a warmer spot
