Cheap(?) Craiglist 944

1987 Porsche 944

I'm not affiliated with this sale other than its proximity to me. Looks like it needs some lov'n. If it's just a slave cylinder that's bad, might not be too terrible of a project.

doesn't look too bad. If the seller knows what he/she is talking about, maybe it IS just a slave cyl. If he doesn't, might be a rubber center (clutch) that gave up. Either way, it's fixable.

nice front valance
looks like he tried to plow some snow or a parking curb with it

EVERYwhere's two hours away from central PA.

If I had the money, I might snag this one though.

Don't forget the old axiom ----->

"Nothing more expensive than a cheap Porsche "

As sometimes there are many other things that need replacing/rebuilding also..

It's good to see when someone takes the time to restore a 944 instead of parting it out ......Keep them on the road.........

a lot of the cars that are being parted out - are wrecks with frame damage, or race cars - when buyer can't get what he wants for the car - and then parts the shell

but, x2 - good to see more of these cars being put back on the road rather then under a knife

there are certainly some nice deals out there that can be made

You would be lucky to find a 924 in that condition and running for 2g in Aus. to find a 944 like that would cost 5g. a decent turbo is like 20g and more.
so someone should buy it and clean it up

The way I look at it when buying a vehicle off craigs list, etc. is if this person is full of crap, and you should assume they are, how much of your money can you get back? Either by making critical repairs or parting out. I don't think I have ever looked at a car, bike, or atv that didn't have some significant problem the seller "forgot" about.

Also, I always make sure to knock a minimum of $200 off when I inspect the vehicle in person and find all the stuff that was sugarcoated over. Ended up knocking my 83 944 down to $500, which was purchased for $2k at a used car lot 6 weeks earlier. Fuchs and new tires were nice enough to get that back if the car ends up being garbage.

Bottom line, don't pay more than you are willing to lose, but after that have fun.

Another thing about Craigs List buys which I forgot to mention. Any time you see an ad that says "great vehicle all it needs is [something easy and cheap]" and its priced low, they are lying. If it was that cheap and easy they would have done it themselves and sold it for bluebook.

this

also, if I see something that doesn't seem right, I lowball

for example, last year there was a red 944 (I think 1988) - seller said that its in perfect condition outside, but needs mechanical work - wheel bearings, brakes, tune-up etc. ... all for a low price of $4k?

some of these people you can't even talk sense into ...

Another red flag...how do you know if the clutch is any good if the slave is bad? Which further means you are flying blind on the trans too. People pull that crap with motorcycles - they say it won't run because of dirty carbs and want full price. Too many unknowns since you have no way of verifying the rest of the drivetrain works. That should drive the price WAY down.

Another red flag - "The price is $1800. There is no need to negotiate on price. That has already been done for you. The first one with $1800 buys this car." I just tend to not even contact people if they come across as a dick in their ad. Just not a good sign. Odds are, those guys are going to swindle someone or nobody will pay them that price when they inspect it. Then it relists a few weeks later at a lower price.

Another red flag...t
