1986 944 Tranny

I have question about the automatic transmission in my 86 944 non turbo, I can feel the heat coming up into the car from the gear shifter and at times it gets hotter than others...why am I feeling that much heat coming thru the shifter opening?

That heat is probably from the exhaust not the transmission. If you are doing a lot of sittting still you will probably get a lot of heat coming up through there. Driving you probably shouldn't get much.

There is supposed to be a block of foam insulation surrounding the shifter, as well as a rubber inner shift boot. You may be suffering from loss of, or damage to either component, or both.

It heats up more when I am driving...is the foam/rubber boot around the shifter under the console?
