Power Steering Question - Series 1
 

Let me start by saying I'm new to 944's but a long time shade tree mechanic. I just took my 29,000 mile 1985 Series 1 out of winter storage. I found a puddle of red fluid on the ground. The power steering reservoir is half full. Putting two and two together I'm assuming I have a PS leak.

Questions - 1) what type / brand of fluid should I use? 2) Can anyone tell me where to start looking for my leak? I didn't see anything obvious from either on top or below. Am I correct in assuming I need to drop the pan (is that the name) below the motor and start seriously looking?

1) The PS fluid used by the 944 series is Derxon Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF). Do not use anything labeled "Power Steering Fluid" as that will not contain the proper additives for the pump to function properly.

2) Often it's the rack itself that leaks due to aging seals. Otherwise, there are really only three lines to check, a line from the pump to the rack and a return line from the rack back to the reservoir as well as the line from the reservoir to the pump.

Yes, you'll want to remove the undertray to look for the leak.
