how do i remove dashboard? - '84 944
 

The title pretty much says it all, how do i remove the dashboard on an early 944?

I see quite a few fasteners, they look like rivets. Are these what holds the dash in? or do these rivets attach the dash cover to some type of metal framework that unscrews fron the chassis?

If i have to drill out rivets, forget it! I'll leave it in. There must be a way to unscrew it.

I have to fix some damaged wiring, plus i want to install an alarm with power door locks, and i figured removing the dashboard would be the easiest way to do a neat job, since anyone who has ever installed a car stereo before will know that trying to do electrical work with the dash in place and reaching through small openings to attach to wires is very difficult.

i could be wrong, but I think you have to remove the windshield to get it out.

Quick run-down;

Remove-

Steering wheel, combination switch, instrument cluster.

Glove box lid.

Center console

Center speaker grille

Right and left A-post trims

Pull off heater pipes from the end-of-the-dash vents

Remove the fixing nut from the center of dash (where speaker grille was)

Remove the screws from the ends of the dash

Pull dash away from body, check that nothing else is connected -
you will have to disconnect all of the switches.

Done!

Takes about 3-4 hours to remove and refit..sometimes less

Most of that stuff is already removed. Do you know how many screws it has holding it in? (just so i don't miss any of them, and end up bending something)
