is it coming from the engine bay or the rear where the transmission is?

It's your belts causing that noise. Likely your balance belt is too tight giving it that sort of "electric motor" sound.

Reverse is a straight-cut, non-synchronized gear. It will whine like a summb*tch. This is common for almost all manual transmissions. If you're only hearing this sound in reverse then it's perfectly normal.

As others have said, these cars do tend to have belt whine as well. Even when the belts are adjusted properly, there will always be some belt noise, though if it is significant when at speed you should definitely have it checked as it could be an indicator that the belts are under excessive tension.
