New or Rebuilt
I just bought an early 1985 944 and I'm gonna have to replace the water pump. It was the only service record the last owner could not come up with. It has about 79k on it so I'm sure its do for a new one.
So will a rebuilt pump hold out as long as a new one? |
The debate continues....
A good rebuild is as good if not better than a new one, a BAD rebuild is aggravation in a box. I went for a new one. It depends on the rebuilder. I hear there is a guy named Zim (I think) who comes well regarded, but I cannot vouch personally. Warranties don't mean a lot as the real difficulty is getting in and out again. Doing the job once is bad enough, doing it a second time is torture.
Your call as it is your car. I went new. It depends on how lucky you feel. You COULD put a used but good boneyard pump in there. Well...Do ya feel lucky? IMHO go new. |
i just bought a rebuilt one for 90 bucks.....looks as good as new AND spins freely!!!

I went with an updated (turbo style) good rebuilt on my 83-944 no problem yet don't go for the cheap one either rebuilt or new use common sense.:)

Which pump? Laso or Hamburg Technic? Which pump does Pelican carry?
|
Don't forget the radiator cap! the gasket was bad on my 85.5 N/A I ment to replace it but never got around to it. Then the car overheaded on the way home form work made it home then a few days later bam, head gasket time!

Laso
SMokin: Laso was the brand that pelican sent me. Beware Laso thermos.
|
Thanks for the heads up Sol. I use OEM parts almost exclusively, in this case, Wahler thermos. I was wondering which pump to use for my next W/P service. I am at present using a Laso (new from 944online not rebuilt). Expensive. New Hamburg T pumps sell for 140$... Less than half the price.
