What are people's thoughts on supercharging a 88 944 2.5? has anyone ever done it? what are costs, and what all do you need to get? how much power can you make safely, without having to worry about blowing the engine up? i appreciate your thoughts.

What you're going to find out is the the engine internals (pistons especially) are not capable of the added heat and stress from turbocharging or supercharging. So you need to rebuild the engine with turbo parts to start off. This is very expensive and you haven't even addressed the brakes and suspension. The whole project is just not practical monetarily. Better to sell the car and buy a 951.
