Gang,
Have been having a problem keeping my 85.5 n/a clean inside. Seems everytime I clean it, a few days later, I end up with fine black powder everywhere. I recognized this dastardly dust to be foam particules. The problem that I had was finding its source. To my dismay, I think that I have isolated the problem foam... the backing for the dash. Has anyone else had this problem? What have you done to combat this? I was thinking of pulling the dash (need to replace most of the bulbs in the cluster/HVAC anyway) and scraping off the foam. Then I realized that the foam was probably put there to eliminate squeaks and rattles... my car squeaks enough as it is, with the 300# springs up front and 150# helpers out back. I really don't want to introduce any more. Does anyone have any solutions other than... clean the interior every day? THX, Firestarter |

If the foam particles are coming out of the defrost vents up near the windshield, I'd turn them off if you are not using them. I believe that leaving these vents permanently open contributes to the dashboard cracking up by the defrost vents.
It's not entirely caused by the sun. The backside of the dash can't take the heat and air blowing through them constantly. Otherwise, I believe air for the cabin is sucked into the car under the hood, before the windshield, and under the black plastic cover around the windshield wiper arms. I don't know if you can clean this area or not...

Are you sure it's not the foam under the hood? That crap turns to dust when it's time is up and could easily get sucked into the blower intake.

Is this on a NA or a turbo? I have a similar problem with my turbo, but haven't noticed it in the NA. The turbos have the underhood insulation, but the NA's do not.

My car is an n/a, but has the foam. I will start there first. Once it is all gone, if I do not notice a reduction in foam particles inside, I will revive this thread.
Thanks All, Firestarter |
