SUPER HUGE KUDOS to Robert Budd and the boys over at Classic 9 Leathershop for the excellent work on my restored dash and the custom dual gauge pod for the center speaker location. FWIW, our 10% discount on Bob's appearance products is on through the end of this weekend.

More shots of Classic 9 Leathershop's expert work prior to installation:

Actually, I opted for the high quality German vinyl, black on black. Nothing else is leather in this car, and it just seemed like it would be out of place. As you can see, the material is a near-perfect match for the OEM interior fit and finish on the early cars. The stitching and craftsmanship is truly remarkable. Bob has several options for stitching color; I was considering doing red stitching, but he talked me out of it, so I went for black-on-black. Looks great

Bob can definitely do late dashes, airbag and non-airbag both. I'm not sure if he has a RHD core to work from, but I'll ask him. Do you need airbag or non-airbag?

Actually, to minimize down-time on the car, I had a dash core removed from a donor car that I used for the new dash. When they saw that one, they said it was one of the worst they'd seen. I told 'em, wait 'til you see pix of the one it's replacing!!! Yeah, the original dash was REALLY hideous! I just couldn't stand looking at those cracks and the carpet coverlay any longer, especially with everything else looking so fresh. Doing the new dash set me back some $$$, but I'm am REALLLLLYYYY happy I did now, totally transforms the interior.

It looks perfect, as good as factory, probably better! I would consider red stitching too, but the black on black looks subtle and classy. Thumbs up!

Their site says DIY dash kits - did you install the new cover yourself?

No, I opted to have them do the full dash repair. My core was in such bad shape, and on top of that, Bob is local to me, so I didn't have to worry about shipping expense, just drove by and dropped it off. He had one of his guys show me how they do the repair. It's definitely not black magic, especially if you're handy with SMC filler, and have the patience to sand and all that. Me, I'm too impatient and undisciplined with such things, which is why I jobbed out the dash and all the body work & paint. I do all my own mechanical stuff, but let the artisans take over the cosmetics. As Clint would say, "A man's got to know his limitations!"

As for the DIY kit, if you start with a decent core, it's probably easy enough to do yourself, but if the core is really badly cracked and heaved (like the one in the OP), I really couldn't recommend the DIY approach in good conscience. I have another dash core from a 924S that's just barely started to crack, which I may attempt a DIY kit on, but this dash was definitely beyond my ability and inclination.
