996 wheels fit a 944?
Hi, I have owned 944's in the past and always put either boxter or 996 wheels on them. They have always bolted up great and I have never needed spacers.
However, my question is will the early 996 turbo wheels fit on a 944? THe suckers are 18x11 in the rears. Anybody know if the 11 inch rear will be too wide? |

The first question is what year 944 - the offset changed in 1987, The 996 & Boxter wheels have the late offset and definately will not work on an early car without spacers.

Thanks for the response. I put 996 and boxster wheels on my late 944 model with no problems. However, im thinking that the 18x11's could possibly rub since they are so wide. any thought?

i tried 18 x 11 on the rear of a 1990 944 S2, too wide. not even close. i think they can be made to fit the early offset cars in the rear. i have mounted up 18 x 10 in the rear of the S2, but they were the thin spoke 5 spoke wheels optional on the 996. no spacers necessary though.

I've used 17x10 rear wheels, and they fit, but if they were wider the width of a sheet of paper, they would not fit.
My guess is that the only way to make 11s fit is to cut the fenders off with a sawzall. |

Someone did get 11s to fit a 951. I believe it was a late offset car. It required extensive suspension adjustment, and in the end, they BARELY fit. IMHO it's not worth the trouble.
Either way, the widest tire you could mount on the 11 would also be the widest tire you could put on the 10, so why not just use the lighter 10?

I've got 11's on my S2 and they fit fine. It's not a problem with the width, it's the placement. I had to move back to '86 rear hubs to pull the wheel inboard. I have hollow-spoke TT II's.

Can you guys posts some pics of your late cars with 18's? Im looking for 17" 5x130 wheels with a late offsets and there are hardly any. there are a ton of 18" but I dont think they would fit my car(1987 NA). My car was lowered 2.5". My front wheels I believe have 3.5" camber too.

FS 911 964 993 Cup II Wheels with Kumho DOT tires
There are some 17" wheels with late offset for you. They are even OEM and with tires for what seems to be a reasonable price. As to the claim that there seems to be very few late offset 17" wheels, I think there were almost no early offset 17" wheels. Almost all of them are late offset unless they are aftermarket. |

Didn't say I liked them either I was just pointing them out in case you were interested. I am not sure why you think the 17's might not fit. Basically if they fit a boxster they should fit on your car and I think the boxster is where most of the 17's come from. Those 18's do look like they fit good but yeah could be an issue if it was lower. Almost looks like it was raised.
Rick what size tires are on those 18's? |

Sure...rears are 255/35 x 18, fronts are 225/40 x 18. I could have gone wider, but these tires were the right price.
I have an 8mm spacer on each front to clear the bearing caps. I plan on lowering the car @ 1 inch or so...nothing drastic...shouldn't have any clearance issues either.

What are the offsets on those wheels? Was the dust cap interference only with the center cap of the wheel or was it keeping the wheel from going on all of the way?

The dust caps interfere with the rim "hub hole" I'll call it, and won't allow the rim to mount properly without it. A must have.
Front offsets are ET50, rears are ET65.

The 17's I have seen either have the wrong offsets or the rim width is small say 7 and 8". I would kill for some 17's with like 8 front and 10 rear. I'll settle for 9 rear. Hell I'll settle for 7.5 front. Just need some nice "different" 17's. Im not ready to buy them now. I have a ton of engine work to do first. Im just researching thats all.

I have a set of cup 1 replicas (I am sure someone will respond and tell me that's not what they are called) that I will likely be looking to get rid of in a few months pending the purchase of another set of wheels. They are exactly the dimensions you just said. They are 17" x 7.5" front and 9" rear. The rears are 255's and the fronts I think are 225's. They fit very nicely on the late offset suspension and the tires are almost new. I would estimate only about 5,000 on the set. The offsets are correct for the late 944. If you are at all interested in them for the future send me a pm and I could get you some pictures of them.

Is that the car you bought to swap your drivetrain into? Is that a turbo shell or non turbo?
