Yes, I am sick of that damned VW! But, I have a plan! January 16th I am going to boot camp. In all I am gonna be gone for around 6 months. I will be getting paid the whole time, so when I return I will have some money saved up. I plan on buying a 944 sometime after that. Honestly, I don't want it as a daily driver; not unless it is a turbo. At this juncture I do not plan on buying a 968 anytime soon. I would whole heartedly prefer a 911 SC.

Boot camp for what service, man? Let me tell you, you don't save quite as much money as you might think... if you're going in as an E-1 (private, airman third, or seaman recuit, depending on the service) you only get paid 886/mo the first 4 months, take taxes out of that leaves you about $3200... then you have uniforms to buy (I guarantee you that your issue won't be complete, unless maybe you're in the Air Force... I spent close to $600 on uniforms a month out of boot).

And you're definitely going to want to spend some of that money to have a good time once you're done training... most of us went out together after we graduated, and stayed hammered for a week. You're going to want to blow some steam off after basic training, I guarantee it.

Just some things to think about, man. No one ever joined the military to get rich.

I am going to into the Marines. My training, in all, will last 6 months. I realize that I won't have a lot of money saved up when I am done, but I do have a few things going for me. I am going in as an e-2. Plus, as you prolly know, the pay rates are going up in '02. Also, I am gonna sell my VW before I leave. So, I will have a couple thousand in the bank before I leave. I have seen several nice 944's in the area going for the mid 3's to low 4's.
-Tim
PS I forgot, I also have a free set of Dress Blues coming for recruiting.

Well, good luck and semper fi, Rollins. What MOS you going into? 6 months is about right for an infantryman (wink wink). Marine Corps infantry, the best trained most important bunch of muddy smelly guys in the world.

I had about $800 in the bank when I shipped to MCRD San Diego. When I left SOI, I had $5k and change, so I saved ~4500 during the whole six months. That would definitely buy you a nice early N/A. (You could save the couple hundred I dropped on beer and buy yourself a nice stereo, too). I blew my savings on my pilot's license, though.

Anyway, not trying to dissuade you or anything. Good luck recruit.

Congrats Raf, sounds nice. Don't forget to invest in a radar detector!
Hey all my fellow Jarheads out there. Easy on Rollins. Every Marine has to learn the hard way. You are not going to save money while you are in bootcamp!
One more thing. I am pretty sure that every Maring gets Dress Blues coming out of Bootcamp!

Sorry to clutter your post with all this talk of the Marine Corp Raf. Anyway, I am not completely sure of my MOS yet. When I was at MEPS they told me I had to take truck driving because nothing else was available, but I scored in the 80's on my ASVAB so they are trying to find something else. As it stands though, it's truck driving. The thing of it is, is that I am going into the reserves until I finish college. So I am going through all the training and then returning home. I will also be in the PLC aviation program, so I will be going to OCS in the summer of 2003. Once I complete that I will again be returning home and work on finishing college. Once I am completely done with college I will (assuming all is right) go active duty, and go to flight school. I can't wait. I'm not sure about the free dress blues thing. I was under the impression that they weren't free. Either way, it's all good.

Hmmm more posts on the military than my car...heh kidding

All I have to say is that this thing is fast. The car just gains a lot of speed with each gear. It gets a lot of looks and the Handling is awesome.

The difference between the 944 and the 968 is that the 968 is a lot smoother. the 968 is also quieter until you punch the 240hp than the engine screams. The clutch feels different on the 968.

To get myself over feeling sorry for having to sell my other car i just pretend I put a nice body kit on it, painted it silver, supercharged it, and put C2 rims on it, and restored my interior

Rollins, what's wrong with driving a VW?

VW's aren't so bad

Congrats RaF, I just converted my engine and tranny on my 88 944 to a 968 6 speed and a 3-liter W/Variocam, so I can relate to the difference you are experiencing. Happy driving.
