Dealing with the problems while i still have it.

getting ready for a build in the coming months so until then the engine i have has to do. finally got it on the road yesterday and it has no power whatsoever like its constantly backfiring. im figuring clogged cat since the car did sit in a yard . got a cat i have to get it to a muffler shop tho so they can weld it in. ordered a few parts today just to make sure its in good shape(wind deflector hinges, sunroof gears, throttle switch, universal 3wire o2, plugs and wires, fuel filter, cap and rotor w/ dust cover, coil, and a new afm) once i get the hesitation out of the way i figure this is gonna be a really good car for the time being. its just the cat is getting on my nerves. it gets hot and heats up something in that tunnel to the point i get smoke in the car so it has to sit till i can get it up on some stands to see whats getting hot and smoking. probably just insulation that i'll rip down anyway so i don't have to worry about fires.

anything i should add to the list or is this a good start?

starting to think back to when i first got the car and figuring out how to get it running...i noticed that the O2 sensor was unplugged so im guessing that the previous owner knew it was bad and left it unplugged to get it to run better without the power loss and hesitation. got the new one on the way anyways but im gonna unplug it again tomorrow and see if it kinda clears up

how many people here run without the foam insulation under the shifter. mine is partially missing already and i wanna clean that all out because i believe that a mouse might have made its way under the console during the time that it was sitting an something might catch from the heat

ok decided to be smart about things and throw the fluke on the plug wires to pick up the rpm signal and discovered that my number one cylinder wasn't firing. plug is different from the rest on the car. so hopefully that solves the hot cat/ misfire situation. glad i didn't have to break out my scope. also ran a bit better with the O2 sensor unhooked. all parts are on the way. its really gonna feel like a new car now. next up carbon dashtop and GTS headlights :D

Hay,
I thought I was the only sane person who talks to himself. My conversations are pretty dull.

I have the foam under the shift handle. It keeps out the noise but more important, the fumes of smoking oil and antifreeze.

The new O2 sensor, do not solder the wires. They are crimped and covered. Did you get the Bosch universal?

You have a scope? Nice.

Back to the cat.
I have the OEM cat and never have a heating/smelling/ or smoking problem and today its 110F outside.

Check the wires for arching in the dark. Check the rotor for tightness. When the car is at idle, spray some starting fluid on the vac lines and intake area to search for leaks.

Do a rebuild on the throttle body with a kit from Home Page
Check the ICV/ISV per Clarks.

Clean the TB with Gumout Throttle Body and Fuel Injection cleaner, not CARB cleaner.

Are the belts OK. Did you test the tension?

yeah i got the new universal bosch. plan is to crimp since im not the greatest soldering on my back. as for the plug the 1st cylinder is a completely different size plug...but my new wires and plugs should be here thursday and im off next week so its off to the races with repairs! i figure the cat got hot from the 1st cylinder dumping fuel and it wasn't burning until it got to the cat. it was reaching temps around 680degs easily. got a magnaflow im gonna have welded up if it doesn't pass emissions or i can't get the temperature under control because it was heating up the insulation (insulation was about 210degs) T belts are brand new. gonna do them again tho after the summer is over. i tension by hand so im use to the feel (pump just is able to turn) throttle body was cleaned when i picked the car up when i was originally trying to figure out the no start issue. yeah i have a handheld scope....comes in handy on sensors.

I have a whole list of things to do to this car to be satisfied with it. after i get it settled and running right i can continue my search for a spare engine and start my RS3.2 project build. yeah i talk to myself but its just to record events since this is the first time i've really been active on a car forum. think this car has changed me. might have to join PCA now:)

N.A.S Story,

It helps if you update your "user CP" on the top blue bar ^.

I see you have an '87 944.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-924-944-968-technical-forum/537521-need-help-wiring-assistance.html

Wait a while before you decide to join PCA----after you get the RS3.2 project going.

what should i update?

John_AZ 06-22-2010 03:59 PM

In the user cp go to "edit signature"

Put in your car details and maybe the future project. Helps when we need to give an answer knowing what ride you have.
